#silverpornsaturday : 1990 $5 Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin

”Blackbirds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven

I’m going have to keep this short today with so much going on in my real world.

This post is inspired by @galenkp‘s Boxing Day post regarding the arrival of his 10 oz. 2020 30th Anniversary Kookaburra from the Perth Mint.

This Inaugural Kookaburra of 1990 is a coin originating from my Father’s collection of silver coins before coming into my possession. I found it packed away in an old crocodile skin suitcase with a musty smell when I first opened it after sitting in the attic for a while.

The Coin

1990 5 Dollars Australian Kookaburra
1
Reverse: Kookaburra perched on tree stump
Legend: THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA 1 OZ. 999 SILVER 1990
0.999 Fine Silver, 31.1g
40.6mm diameter

I recall this coin with it’s original square capsule, stuffed in a small manila envelope with a hand written receipt for $8 CAD dated 1996. A quick check on Ebay shows this now selling at a minimum $28(raw or not in original capsule) and up, tripled it’s price since, not too bad in the appreciation department.

1990 5 Dollars Australian Kookaburra
1
Obverse: Elizabeth 3rd Portrait facing Right
LEGEND: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 5 DOLLARS
Reeded, Reference ,KM# 189
Mintage of 300,000 BU, 22,000 Proof

What I find peculiar is that the Perth Mint changed the Fiat amount of this series Coin from $5 AUD to $1 AUD on the 1992 coin and stayed at $1 AUD since. I am curious to why that decision was made. Do any of you know why? Was it not to make it look like they were following the $5 Canadian Maple leaf?

Upon going through my Father’s estate, I though these coins were pretty cool. I’d reminisce of him letting me play Pirate with the loose constitutional coins in his collection, but this Kookaburra and some of the other numismatic coins I didn’t see until I was wrapping up the last of the estate.

Back then I never thought I’d be adding newer Kookaburras, Koalas, and Zodiac coins. Looking back, by letting me play pirate was his way of planting the seeds of a Silver Stacker that I am today.

So to properly ‘Bookend’ this series I will be adding the 30th anniversary 2020 Kookaburra to my Stack soon. He'd probably want it that way.

I hope you enjoyed this Old Kookaburra coin, thank you for stopping by my Blog for this very quick read.

What a special coin and so many memories about days with your Dad. Thanks for sharing those details with us. That Kook and the other coins and silver pieces you have accumulated may perhaps be your kids' possession in the future... and they too will have the findest of memories of you and your special stack.
Have a lovely Saturday, sis @kerrislravenhill, take care 🥰🌺🤙 and a million hugs and kisses Hugs and Kisses 🤗💕💋!!!!

My Dad was special, and some coins will hold those fond memories.
He didn't have a particular theme he collected but I can assume he liked US and Canadian Constitutional since it represented the bulk of his silver collection in old cardboard Whitman albums.
In turn, he got some of it from Gramps.
A Silver Stacking tradition I hope my Kids will take serious.
Always with love, Sis! 🌺 💝 🌹 💓 🌸

Stopping check-in out that sexy ish😋

Would using my Punk spike leather garter belt as a prop a bit too much? Fits the Hashtag.

Classic beauty. Hate those cases they came in. Two of mine got really bad tarnish in them

I noticed they don't match with the Air-tites on the rest of my Kooks either, What to do, what to do.

I sold the two that tarnished and put the other in a regular air-tite

What a wonderful way to stay connected to your dad! And how great to picture a little you playing pirate long before your piratey ways today. I hope your kids carry your family’s love of the shiny into the next generation. 🖤

And I'm still playing Pirate! ☠ ☠ ☠

Is the picture at the start really little you?!! A wee pirate! 😍

No she is not. A Stunt double as I didn't have as fancy an outfit and a bit chubbier.

I have a kookaburra somewhere perth makes the nicest coins.

Definitely, Perth's Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) often look Proof like or Proof compared to what the Royal Canadian Mint pass off as BU grade, not always but often.

I think I have the 2015 25th Anniversary Kook hidden somewhere... I'll save it for another time.
Been a slice!

Ah ok, sounds good. I'm more interested in the silver content than what's on the coin and buy more minted bars than coins for that reason, more solver for less money. Still, some of the more rare coins have some additional value I guess.

I admit I can often be a Sucker for a Pretty coin and pay the extra premium above that of generic silver.

Can't we all? I have many myself. I have one in the shape of Australia, a Great White shark coin from the Perth Mint...Paid the equivalent of 3 ounces for it, for only the 1 ounce weight it actually is. Oh well. Usually I don't do that sort of thing.

The first is always a number 1. I have a few kookaburras, but not this number 1. I must do something about it. :=)

With 200k made it shouldn't be difficult to find a high grade at a reasonable price, thanks for the comment and the trendo. 😄

5 Dollars Australian Kookaburra, now thats a quality Silver coin...I need one of these!11

The 1991 Kook is denominated $5 before being changed to $1 on the 1992 Kook so I may try and get that one to if I can get a decent price. Thanks for the comment @silvertop

Thats interesting, I did not know that....
