What is Immigration?

Immigration is a means of relocating from one’s country to another country where they do not reside.

Reasons why people emigrate

For greener pastures: Nigerians seeking greener pastures abroad is not news, everyone wants to japa in Nigerian parlance. Although we are blessed with numerous natural resources which should make things easy for us but it is not the case. The administration has mismanaged these resources for their personal gain. This has forced lots of citizens to migrate to other countries for greener pastures.

  • Poverty: the high rate of poverty is appalling for a country that perceives itself as the “Giant of Africa”, yet does not do what is expected of a giant. In 2021, statistics had shown that about 90 million Nigerians were extremely poor which is expected to continuously increase in years to come.

  • High level of Unemployment: Every year, thousands of Nigerian youths graduate with no promise of having a good and decent job. We are in a country that demands a 10-year job experience yet expects them to be 25-30 years old. Like they expect us to gain experience from our mother’s womb. Lack of jobs has led to a sporadic increase in crimes ranging from armed robbery, kidnapping, and rituals which have caused most foreign companies to withdraw their investments and interests in Nigeria.

  • Poor Education: Currently, Nigerian students are at home, due to a persistent strike that has been on since February. Our educational system has lost its value and quality and this has caused an increase in students seeking to study abroad. Nigerians are high intellectual people so it is not hard to easily blend into any country they go to, helping the countries to build their industries and continue to be relevant in the global economy.

  • Better Healthcare: Lots of people travel abroad to get access to better healthcare facilities to get the best treatment due to the better equipment over there, especially if it’s an emergency.

  • Adventure: Some people are adventure lovers that love the thrill they get from traveling across the world.

  • Security: Recent records have shown that Nigeria is the 8th least peaceful country to be in. Nobody is safe, you don’t know if your area will be struck next. The high level of unemployment and poverty has given room to the insecurity that no one can control. Some persons travel to avoid being in the crossfire when the insecurity hits.

  • Marriage: For some people, they migrate because of marriage. They join their spouse in whichever country they base to stay there permanently with him.

What are the challenges that immigrants face?

  1. Language barrier: The language barrier is one of the greatest challenges that emigrants face. Comparing Nigeria a country that has multiple cultures as an example, it is hard to understand what someone from the Yoruba region is saying if you are from the Igbo tribe in a country like China, it will be hard for a non-speaking Chinese person to understand how to effectively communicate.
  2. Lack of Employment: Moving over to another country in search of a job is not easy at all, because they might end up not being accepted into any companies.
  3. Housing: Travelling abroad without having any relatives is hard, horror stories have been told by immigrants who found it hard to cope with the lack of accommodation.
  4. Cultural Differences Every country has its guiding principles, cultures, and values guiding them. You discover that what you assume was okay, is not acceptable in their country. For instance, Africans live by using the rod, and not spoiling the child but in a country like America you will find it hard to raise your child with this set of rules that you don't touch your child, you would have to learn how to avoid and such attitude to avoid going to prisons.

Economic Benefits Of Immigration

  • It contributes to the economic growth of the countries.
  • It increases the availability of skilled workers.
  • The immigrants help their economy grow with an increase in labor needs, purchasing power, stocks, and paid taxes.
  • It creates room for cultural diversity.

Why do many immigrants discover that their dreams in the foreign country cannot easily be realized?

  • They discover that their is discrimination on color, the country you comes from(some cointries don't accept a nigerian in their workplace or country because nigeria has high corruption and terrorism rate)
  • Isolation from family: Moving miles away from close family is not easy, their ia homesickness, the inabilty to bond with foreigners.
  • Lack of funds will frustrate someone. When their bubble is bursted with no one willing to employ them except it is a menial job will make them realize that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

Have I ever considered migrating to another country?

As a lover of languages and advantures, I love travelling. I would love to travel to other countries not to live there but to visit the beautiful sites and vacation.

Like I said earlier, the grass is not greener on the other side, it is not easy to survive abroad especially if you are alone, but in all, you do what you have to do to survive.

I invite @confydence and @iamvictorious take part in this contest.

Nawa for our country educational system, since that time they have not resumed and that is really affecting so many people.

Just pray that God will help us survive this.

Our educational system has failed us, and we cannot do anything about it.

Immigration has really helped so many countries economy but so many immigrants are usually denied of some rights in there new country

If our economy was good, other people will be rushing to Nigeria to help us grow the economy

You are really making a point which is every country should build there economy so as to attract immigrants to help increase there economy
Interesting

You are right African continent for instance we are blessed with all the natural resources but we are misusing it and we have bad leaders who are not helping us and because of that poverty is our major problem and because of that many of our people has move to most of the European countries to find job and I think is high time we make used of those resources and be able to provide jobs for our people.

If only the government knew how to manage these resources for the benefit of other people
