Learn With Steem||Traditional Way of Making Broom

Preamble

Blissful evening to my friends and fellow steemians.Blogging and posting on Steemit has earned me a lot of friends and I have learnt a lot through reading quality posts made by others.Learning will barely end and Steemit is one of the ways to learn.I am sure a lot of us have learnt a lot here on Steemit.

For this post,I want to highlight how to produce broom from scratch.Broom is a popular household material used for sweeping.Virtually every household in Nigeria has atleast one broom.I learnt this process back then in primary 3.It was compulsory then,every friday all the pupils are expected to submit their handwork.The handwork could be broom,basket and other craft.

Steps in making broom

Below are the step taken to produce a broom.

• Harvesting Palm Frond

The first step is to get palmfrond.Palmfrond is a combination of the branches and leaves of a palm tree.It is usually long and green in colour.So, one is expected to get as many palmfronds as possible, depending on the quantity of broom expected to produce.

• Detaching the Leaflet

The second simply involves detaching the leaflets individually from the palmfronds.The leaves are detached from the point of attachment on the rachis of the palmfrond.This process does not take a long period of time because you can detach up to four leaflets at once.After detaching all the leaflets,they are assembled on the floor.

• Scraping the Leaflets

After the leaflets are assembled.You can notice that each leaflet has a tiny line at the centre of it.That tiny line is what would be used for the broom.

So in this step,a knife or sharp objects os used to scrap out the leafy parts of the leaflets leaving just the tiny line.After all the leafy parts are removed from all the leaflets.You will notice that the tiny lines are now the thing remaining.Assemble them on the floor.

• Binding the Line

Now it is expected that the tiny lines in form of stick,are brought and binded together with the help of a rope.At this point,the a bunch of room has been formed.Keep the broom under the sun for some hours so that it would be strong and firm for sweeping.

The above four steps sums up how to produce a broom from palmfrond.

Uses of Broom

•Sweeping:
Broom is generally used for sweeping the floor of the room,passage, surrounding,untiled bathroom,market and other places that requires to be swept.

•Removing Cobwebs and Debris

Brooms can also be used for removing cobwebs and for removing debris from water surface or other surfaces.Dust can also be moved from chairs by hitting a broom on it.

• Symbolic Purposes

Some groups make use of broom as a symbol of their identity.They believe that broom is used to sweep out evil and corruption and so such groups use broom as a symbol of zero tolerance to evil and corruption.

Cleanliness is a habit that is adorned in all parts of the world and broom is one of the oldest objects used to effect cleanliness through sweeping or otherwise.Broom is produced locally from the palmfrond of a palm tree.Feel free to tell me other uses of broom in your locality.
