I am so delighted to be a participant.

Eggon Bride and Groom

I am @patience90, the name of my village is Washo in Akun development area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria and I am from the Eggon tribe.

Dowry is a payment of money or exchange of property from a man in exchange of a bride. Though in some cultures, reverse is the case.

Eggon as a tribe is not an exception to the payment of dowry, though it varies from family to family.

Before I explain further, allow me to state the dowry list here.

1. The Bride's items:
   set of box (5 pieces) and each box contains cosmetics, jewelries, different wrappers and materials, shoes and bags.

2. Bride's mother's list (anaya anwe):
   an iron bucket, basin, a wrapper, a pair of shoe and bag and an umbrella.

3. The extended family list (algoh ugwun) :
   * 6 basins of cooked traditional beans (large Lima beans) mixed with black beneseed and palm oil.
   * 3 complete cooked goat meat.
   * a bag of maize and guinea corn for cooking during the traditional ceremony period.
   * soup ingredients.
   * an agreed amount of money.
   * 10 crates of soft drinks and 5 crates of malt drinks.
   * 5 live chicken.
   * 2 live goats.

However, the payment of dowry in my village are in processes and steps as follows :

💖1. The man visits the lady's family with 1 or 2 friends to state his interest in marrying the lady. The intended groom also goes with an elderly man from the bride's neighborhood as a middle man between the two families (bride and groom's family, and the traditional beans will be cooked in the middle man's house)

💖2. If the lady accepts, she will demand for some money as acceptance money.

💖3. A day will be fixed for the collection of dowry list from the bride's family. After the collection of the dowry list, the date for introduction will be fixed.

💖4. On the introduction day (fwei tsakpa) , 2 out of those 5 set of the box will be presented together with bride's mother's items and a basin of cooked traditional beans with 2 crates of malt drinks.
After the introduction ceremony, another day will be fixed for the main traditional wedding where everyone will be invited to witness.
NB: only few few people are invited to the introduction.

💖5. In the evening of the day before the traditional wedding, the other 3 remaining boxes, bag of maize and guinea corn will be conveyed to the bride's house.

💖6. On the agreed date of the traditional wedding, the bride visits the middle man's house in the morning in the company of her friends and 3 aunties to taste the cooked beans before it will be taken to be presented to her father in company of traditional dancers.

💖7. After accepting the cooked beans and soft drinks, the bride's father will place a female goat on his daughter's shoulder as a sign of blessing of fruitfulness in the marriage.

💖8. Then dance and celebration continue till dusk.

💖9. The following morning, the bride's family will then present different cooking utensils and furnitures to their daughter to start a new.
