Good day to everyone one here in @SteemAlive. How was your day? Welcome to day 5 of the contest. I will be presenting to you Abraham Lincoln the 16th president of the United States. A man who preserved the Union during the U.S. Civil War and brought about the emancipation of slaves.

Background Of Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was an American statesman and lawyer who served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States through the American Civil War—its bloodiest war and perhaps its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis.

Abraham Lincoln is most famous for leading the country during the American Civil War. His leadership in the North helped the country to remain strong and defeat the South keeping the country united. He also pushed for the freedom of all slaves throughout the nation. Growing Up Abraham Lincoln came from humble beginnings. He was born in a single-room log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky. His parents were Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. His father lost everything when Abraham was young and they had to move to Perry County, Indiana where they struggled to get by. When he was just nine years old, his mother died and his sister Sarah took care of him until his father remarried. Abraham had very little formal education, but had a strong interest in books and learning. Most of what he learned was self-educated and from books he borrowed. His family later moved to Illinois where Lincoln would set out on his own. As a young man, Lincoln worked a variety of jobs including shopkeeper, surveyor, and postmaster. For a time, he even split firewood with an axe for a living. He soon moved into politics and won a seat in the Illinois Legislature when he was 25.

He was the tallest president at 6 feet 4 inches tall.
He set up a national banking system while he was president.
He also established the Department of Agriculture.
He was known as a gifted storyteller and liked to tell jokes.
On the day he was shot, Lincoln told his bodyguard that he had dreamt he would be assassinated.
He was the first president who had a full beard.
He often stored things like letters and documents in his tall stove-piped hat.
He was a voracious reader.

Legacy

Lincoln's first inaugural address, he explored the nature of democracy. He denounced secession as anarchy, and explained that majority rule had to be balanced by constitutional restraints. He said "A majority held in restraint by constitutional checks and limitations, and always changing easily with deliberate changes of popular opinions and sentiments, is the only true sovereign of a free people."

The successful reunification of the states had consequences for how people viewed the country. The term "the United States" has historically been used, sometimes in the plural ("these United States"), and other times in the singular. The Civil War was a significant force in the eventual dominance of the singular usage by the end of the 19th century.

Lincoln is frequently cited by historians and average citizens alike as America's greatest president. An aggressively activist commander-in-chief, Lincoln used every power at his disposal to assure victory in the Civil War and end slavery in the United States.

Lincoln's philosophy was perhaps best summed up in this Second Inaugural Address, when he stated, "With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations."

How He Died

President Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth while attending a play at the Ford Theatre in Washington D.C. He died the next day on April 15, 1865.

1• He came from a humble background.

2• He was a voracious reader. You know the saying " great readers are great leaders". He prove such.

3• He was a peace maker because he unified the whole nation from the civil wars.

4• Abraham Lincoln was an honest man and he used to do menial job like logging wood with his ax.

5• Reports have it that he never cheated anyone in any business transactions.

Conlusion

The history of Abraham Lincoln has taught me that success is a state of the mind and our backgrounds can not stop us from achieving our heart desire. I also see that reading is a very vital part to success and not necessarily a degree. I am now more determined to use the power of my mind to achieve the unachievable.Thank you.
