Good day steemians, I welcome you all again to my blog. This is my fourth entry in this contest and In this post I will be reviewing the life of an American physician and the first African American woman to become an astronaut; “Mae Jemison”. Enjoy!
INTRODUCTION
A genius, is a person known for his/her extraordinary intellectual ability and I know this to be a concise definition.
Mae Jemison, in full Mae Carol Jemison was on born October 17, 1956, Decatur, Alabama, U.S.A).
Jemison moved with her family to Chicago at the age of three. There she developed interests of science throughout her childhood in anthropology, archaeology, evolution, and astronomy. She graduated a high school in 1973, at the age of 16.
MAE JAMISON EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
- She entered Stanford University in 1973 and she received degrees in chemical engineering and African American studies in 1977.
- In 1977 Jemison entered medical school at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
- She studied in Kenya in 1979.
- She graduated from medical school in 1981, and, after a short time as a general practitioner with a Los Angeles medical group.
- She became a medical officer with the Peace Corps in West Africa.
- She worked in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control on several research projects, including development of a hepatitis B vaccine.
- In October 1986, she was 1 of 15 accepted for training out of 2,000 applicants in NASA.
- In June 4, 1987, Jemison became the first African American woman to be admitted into the NASA astronaut training program.
- Jemison completed her training as a mission specialist with NASA in 1988 and she became the first African American woman astronaut.
- In 1989 she was assigned to support a cooperative mission between the United States and Japan designed to conduct experiments in materials processing and the life sciences.
- In September 1992, STS-47 Spacelab J became the first successful joint U.S.-Japan space mission.
- Jemison’s maiden space flight came with the weeklong September 1992 mission of the shuttle Endeavour.
- After completing her NASA mission, she formed the Jemison Group to develop and market advanced technologies.

She served on the board of directors of the World Sickle Cell Foundation from 1990 to 1992. She has also served as an advisory committee member of the American Express Geography Competition and an honorary board member of the Center for the Prevention of Childhood Malnutrition.

CONCLUSION
Mae Jamison made history and became a role model and an inspiration to many around the world. My interest on world records made me to know about this great genius but my complete knowledge about her was gotten from britannica.com
