Introduction

In today's world, death is an unavoidable reality. We all know that we will return to our creator at some point, but all we hope to avoid is an early death. The death of a loved one can make us sad, wallow in thoughts, reminisce about happy times we shared with the departed, soak our pillows and clothes with tears, and make us desire that the person could return.

Death News

Have you ever been stunned for a few minutes after hearing shocking news? This was how I felt the day I learned of my Uncle's death.
I arrived at work on the morning of August 18th, cleared my desk, and was ready to start the day's work. A notification appeared on my phone while I was working, and I picked it up to check the message. It was a message from our WhatsApp Family group chat.
"Uncle Nnamdi is dead," the message read. What was I thinking? Nnamdi, which uncle? I asked this inquiry because I wanted to make sure it was my uncle Nnamdi, and we hadn't heard anything about him being sick prior to that time. My sister replied that mummy's eldest brother was no longer alive. Mehn!!!!!!! My spine was tingling with cold goosebumps! I was flabbergasted, tears streamed down my cheeks, and a flurry of questions and thoughts flooded my mind. I remembered him trying to look after his siblings since their parents died the last time I saw him. I couldn't think straight, so all I did was return to the group and inquire as to what had happened to him; was he ill? He was not sick, according to the response I received.
My sister went on to say that they had been told over the phone that his wife had gone to work and that his younger daughter was heating hot water to make him pap. When he began shouting "My head, my head," his daughter hurried out and inquired as to what was the matter. Blood was streaming out of his nose the next thing she saw, and he couldn't speak. The wife and elder daughter were called with the help of neighbors, and they came and transported him to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead. When his siblings were contacted, they were all taken aback. They called their brother and shook his body, but he did not answer or shake his body.

Pre Burial preparations

We didn't see my uncle for weeks, and he couldn't call us or vice versa, as days ran into weeks, and weeks turned into months. We realized he was no longer among us. We talked about his death every day, and all we could say was, "It's all right."
After a few weeks, burial preparations began. A number of meetings were held. Before the dead were buried, the villagers were confronted with the rite they would be given. Estimates for money and other burial logistics were established, and the burial date was set.

Burial

The funeral was held on November 18th, 2021. It was a day of mixed emotions because, while still grieving, I was able to visit uncles, aunties, cousins, and other relatives that I hadn't seen in a long time, and I was able to experience what going to the village was like once more.
The environment was set for the burial, and we shared our joys and sorrows. A DJ played music to which people danced, and villagers streamed in and out as they awaited their funeral rituals. Church members were also present, and the choristers sang wonderful voices. We paid our uncle our last respects with the help of God. When those of us who went to the mortuary returned, we were all in tears.
During the Burial, some village elders were summoned to speak briefly about my uncle's existence on this planet. Following that, the biography was read out to the congregation, and the Pastor began his speech.
The pastor who presided over the funeral exhorted everyone to do good deeds while on this earth since we never know when it will be our turn, and we can only be remembered by our deeds. The pastor prayed for the entire family after the service, and then the body was brought to the graveside.

Following that, there was entertainment and condolence messages/levies from various groups to which my uncle joined during his lifetime.

Conclusion

Whatever our circumstances, perhaps we should learn to declare, "It is well with our souls." We thanked God for a successful burial. Let us live as if we only have one minute left on this planet, for death, like robbers, will not notify us before knocking on our door.
