Traditional Marriage Rite

Tradition is the way of life of some people, different traditional rites differs in different hometown, some tradition may choose to do Introduction and submission of bride price list and go ahead with white wedding or court wedding. It depends on hometown culture. The union between two individuals starts with courtship, mutual interest and love. If the two individuals are compatible with each other, they could decide to seal it with marriage.

Things Required From The Husband To Be

Once consent have been secured from the bride's immediate family and kensmen, the husband to be processed in getting the items on the pride price and the date for the traditional marriage is fixed. Some of the items are as follows:
20 tubers of yam
Wrapper
Goat
Chicken
Palm wine
Kolanut
Garden egg
Dry gin etc.
The husband to be is also required to take care of some of the expenses of the traditional marriage ceremony.

How the actual marriage is Performed

My hometown which is Aboh Mbaise, the traditional marriage rites which begins with "Iju Ajuju" when a young man wants to settle down with an mbaise woman, he goes to ask questions and finds out about the immediate family of the girl. Questions such as:
What kind of people they are?
Are they susceptible to madness or illness?
Are they thieves?
Do they have a particular sickness in their lineage?
Are their women well behaved?
What they are known in the community?
After the Iju Ajuju and the findings are positive about the girl, the groom family proceed to meeting the bride's family.
The groom goes to the bride's family to lay down his intentions towards marrying their daughter with his immediate family or accompanied by his father. The groom father will say "we saw a beautiful flower in your compound and we have come to plug it". The groom will state his intentions and the girl is called out by her parents to find out her own opinions towards her suitor and if she knows her suitor and would want to marry him. If her reply is positive, they would proceed to the next stage.
The next stage, the meeting between the groom's family and the bride's extended family which is known as "umunna" ( kinsmen). The groom's family restate their interest of marrying their daughter in the presence of the umunna. Once their consent have being accepted, the date of the traditional marriage is fixed (Igba nkwu) and the bride price list is sent out. Drinks and kola is being shared. The second visit, the groom to be proceeds with the bride price negotiation and payment.
The final stage, which is the Igba nkwu nwanyi the ceremony is done at the bride's family and the bride's family host the groom's family, friends and well wisher, at the ceremony the groom will present the bride price list and items.
The bride's first outing comes out to greet friends and we'll wishers and in-laws.
The second outing, which is the highlights of the event, the bride's father prays and shower blessings and bestow the bride with a cup of palm wine to go find her husband and give it to the man she intends to spend the rest of her life with, the bride dances with the cup of wine round the compound looking for her husband and being willed by other young man. When she finds her husband, she kneels and present the cup of palm wine to her husband, the groom drinks which means he have accepted her as his wife, the couple dances and kneel in front of the bride's father as they receive prayers and multiple blessings.

Food served during the ceremony

Different kinds of food and drinks are being served during the ceremony such as
Joff rice
Pepper soup
Fried rice
Soups like
Egusi soup
Vegetable soup etc

Music played during the ceremony

Different cultural music are being played during the ceremony, the highlights is when the bride is looking for the husband, the music makes the bride to dance happy and do small shakara.

Your town has a great tradition. That 'iju ajuju' is very important because many marriages are destroyed because they never found out if the person they wish to many has mental issues. Some families has deadly family traits. It's very necessary. Well done. Your entry is great.

The traditional marriage is one where the husband and wife are legally united, in order to be able to make decisions and take care of the children.
