How traditional marriage is done in my village(Rumuelechi, Ikwerre)
When a man wants to marry in Ikwerre land,the family of the groom will do some secret investigation on the bride's family background
If the family is ok, the groom's family goes to visit the bride's family, after the visit, the bride's family will fix a date for a revisit, so they will take time to enquire from the bride-to-be and also investigate the groom's family background.
After approval from the both families, the marriage process starts and the bride's family is given an intermediary called nsu mi izhe.
The dowry includes;
- Maya ngwo (palm wine)
- Akameru (local dry gin)
- Iwai onu azu (money for fish for entertainment)
Next part is Haa-nne-nwe-nwo( mother's price).
The groom will adorn the bride's mother with;
- Wrappers
- Shoes
- Handbag
- Headtie
- Necklace etc
Next part is Haa-nda-nu-okwu-onu-eku nwere (the bride price). Drinks will be presented to the father, Nde oko badu(elders) and okorobiatho( male youth) and they will negotiate on how much will be paid.
The groom will adorn the father with;
- Wrappers
- Dorny
- Hat
- Walking stick
This is very important before the couple gives birth, because any child born before bride price belongs to the bride's family.
Then finally they fix a date for the ogbanu (marriage ceremony).
This is the traditional wedding day where the young girls escorts the wife to her husband's house and spends 4 days with the couple before going back to their various destinations.
