My Country's Culture||Yoruba Urhobo Efik Hausa

Greetings lovely steemians in STEEMALIVE community.
It's my pleasure to share with you Four(4) Cultural groups in Nigeria. Culture is one thing that defines the people in a state, country or nation, and as a continent as a whole.

What Is Culture

In basic terms, culture is the way of life of the people living in a place. This entails the way and system they do things. How they behave, what they believe in and how they breed is known as culture.

In details, culture can be described as the norms/customs, traditions, dress patterns, foods, way of greetings, etc that defines a particular set or group of people living in a particular geographic region. Everywhere in the world, there are various cultures with both similar (slightly similar) and also having comparative differences even if they are in the same country.

There are so many cultural groups in my country Nigeria. We have Igbo, Yoruba, Urhobo, Efik, Hausa and many others. The following are some cultural groups in Nigeria

Yoruba Culture

Yoruba Culture is the widest culture in Nigeria and make up over 15% of the cultural groups in Africa. The people of Yoruba were formally known as the people of Ile Ife and was found was back as the 7th Century BC. They occupy the following states:

  • Lagos state
  • Oyo state
  • Edo state
  • Ogun state
  • Ekiti state
  • Kwara state
  • Osun state, etc.

These states Make up the people of Yoruba.
Dressing: their men dress in Buba also known as Agbada while their women tie wrappers on their waist and wear blouses adorned with big beads and another wrappa they cross on their shoulders.

Food: Pepper stew, draw soup with eba, party jollof rice, etc
Greetings:The men greet prostrating themselves on the ground and the women bow low to greet as a sign on respect.

Efik Culture

Efik Culture is the culture of the Efikmites(people who speak Efik). They are so many sublanguages spoke by them which includes; Ibibio, Oron, Eket, Uruan and so on. They all are summed into one culture known as "the Efik Culture." They are found in the southern part of Nigeria. They occupy the following states:

  • Akwa Ibom state
  • Cross River state

They are very close to the Atlantic ocean and is very rich in oil, fish, farm produce, etc.
Dressing: The men tie wrappers and put on white native shirts with beads on his neck. They also knod tie with wrappa matching with the one they tie on their waist. Their women wear beads on their waists and include it in their hair. They tie wrappa with no knot at one side and they use they wrappa to cover their shoulders. For beauty, they draw marks on their bodies.

Food: Stewed rice, jollof rice, yam, beans, afang soup, editan Soup, atama soup, etc.
Greetings: The men put their hands on their chest and bow their heads while the women bow very low as a symbol of respect to their elders.

Hausa Culture

Hausa Culture is the culture of the Hausas who populate the Northern region of Nigeria. They are widely known as cattle rearers and marry at a very early age. They spread out to every where in the country. Their women has a very nice long hair whilr their men has curly hair. They speak Hausa language.
They occupy the following states:

  • Kano
  • Sokoto
  • Zamfara
  • Kastina
    Dressing: Their women dress in long gowns and wear beads on their legs and hands and cover their hair leaving only their face. Their men dress in Taichi which also looks like Agbada and a hat, or a very long embroidered garment.
    Food:Nuts, kwili-kwili, etc
    Greetings: Inakwna which means good morning. They do this while holding up their hands and lowering their heads.

Urhobo Culture

Urhobo Culture. Do you know about this culture? It is a unique culture that seems like it were not there before now. Tuber plants; yam, cassava, as well as maize, beans, pepper, and nuts, are the Urhobo people's major crops. The Urhobo's also fish and are well recognized for their canoes, sacred sculptures, masks, marks, bronze jewelries, and masquerade dances.
The following are some states occupied by the Urhobo's:

  • Benue state
  • Bayelsa state
  • Delta state
    Dressing:Women dress in native skirts and use wrappers to cover their chest and they use sown beads to cover their shoulders and adorn the hair beautifying themselves with marks on the skin. The men dress on long garments with trousers and heavy beads.
    Food:Yam, cassava, maize(corn),
    Greetings:They greet similarly like that of the other cultures. The men greets the elders holding their hands and bending low, while the women greet kneeling down in front of the elders. Showing deep respect.

Having different cultures is very exciting. We get to know each other and the way of life of each people. I learn how to be respectful, what about you? I am grateful to you all.
