Washing of hands regularly prevents us from so many disease like you mentioned and it's very effective and important only when we was our hands on a running tap.
I was recently reminded of the importance of washing your hands. When I was in a grocery store, I saw a sign that read, "Please wash your hands before leaving the store." I think it is important to remind people of this because it is very easy to forget to wash your hands.
