Every village, community and state have different customs and traditions as regards to traditional marriage.

Today i want to discuss how traditional marriage is been done in my own village.

Firstly i am from Ntigha Umuaro in Mgboko Umuanunu Ancient Kingdom Obingwa L.G.A Abia State.

In Ngwa land there are different ways in which different Communities do their traditional marriage.

In my own village we have our custom in regards to traditional marriage.

First is introduction

Introduction is the first official visit of a groom to the in-laws home.

It signifies respect and earnestness on the part of the groom.

Introduction is done with the following:

  • Five kolanut.
  • A bottle of hot drink with five thousand naira for the father.
  • A bottle of wine with three thousand naira for the mother.

After that, the groom will collect what we call the list, which contains items for the dowry for both the mother and the father.

Also the same list contains requirements for the kinsmen

To get that list, the groom will pay the sum amount of ten thousand naira.

My traditional marriage invitation card.

Tho in most occasions there will be agreement with the parents of the wife as regards the list,so he will present what he can afford.

A day before that fixed date the husband will come with his kinsmen to present the requirements, and pay the dowry which is a certain amount of money put in an envelope.

My traditional marriage day

There was a decorator and music entertainer.

I came out on my first attire to greet the villagers as the custom says, then i sprayed perfume on each and every one of them.

Secondly i change to my second attire and danced to the chairman of my occasion and he gave me a cup of palm wine to go in search of my husband.

IMG_20210709_070327_942.jpgwhen i found him i served him the drink, and after drinking the palm wine,Ngwa culture demands that he put some amount of money in that cup.

We went together back to the chairman of the occasion

The chairman will now give me a bottle of drink to take along with my husband to my parents.

On that note i will publicly declare to both my parents and other eye witnesses that this is the man i want to marry.

Finally my father and my kinsmen will now hand me over to my husbands kinsmen

After everything my mother now presented her gift as a mother to her newly married daughter.

Her present includes:

  • One big pot filled with a well cooked soup.
  • One set three in one of plate
  • One bag of garri.
  • One basin.
  • One shifter.
  • One local stove or gas cooker.
  • One set of spoon.
  • One empty drum for water.

In conclusion my village way of traditional marriage i love it,because its much easier than some villages, tho still difficult for some men
Who are not financially stable.

But one good thing is that with agreement everything is nogotiable.

I hereby invite @meymeyshop,@goodybest,@essygold to come and tell us what traditional marriage looks like in their village.

Thank you so much,my dear one

Hello @beautybb,what i personally like about the traditional marriage in your village is the fact that while the customs are already in place, due consideration is also given to suitors who are financially limited based on mutual agreement,i like that and thanks for sharing.
