Learn with me #2 "Training on Leadership"
@emmaprince
Greetings everyone, hope we are all doing great. Thanks @miftahulrizky for organizing this contest "Learn with me #2"
Last month, I traveled to the city of Port-Harcourt in Nigeria for Leadership training titled "What Qualifies You for Leadership?". So many speakers were there and so many things were said which I learnt and understood.
The reason for the leadership training was for leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals to change the leadership narratives.
Leadership is first of all who you are, before what you do and not by mouth.
Leadership has been widely considered as power to affect persons, established as genuine followership ship, it is important to note that being powered to affect persons doesn't make you a leader.
I have seen too many people who occupy leadership positions, who neither have a road map nor genuine interest for the people they admit to be leading.
There are many credits that are expected of a leader, just to mention some very fundamental:
The first speaker talks about:-
VISION
One need to have a clear picture of the destination which is known as the future, where you want or claim to be taking your followers to. A clear statement of the desired future empowers you with the roadmap that will help you stay focused.
The truth of the matter is that some politicians, who claim they want to make Nigeria great again do not affirm or strongly know and comprehend the nature or meaning of what constitutes a great nation.
We need only credible leaders in Nigeria. The truth is that power does not change people. It only make visible what is already inside you.
The second speaker talks about:-
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge is the attribute one have by the virtue of what he or she knows and it is the knowledge that one has that certifies one to be a leader. Study to show yourself approved.
The greatest from of knowledge is in you that's why you should never know to the point that you despise insight from others. We should learn to seek information form others because we learn to know in part and as such life is designed in such a way that we do not have all of the perspective to an issue, that's why we need to be fast to hear, slow to talk and slow to be angry.
SERVICE
The president of Nigeria is not more than the least Nigerian by implications, he must first be a citizen before he becomes the president. Unfortunately in Africa, we have leaders who are bigger than the people.
We should not wait for when our leaders will make a difference for things to work in Africa or wait for the period when the owners of those that have large landmass to decide to take responsibility for the change we all expect.
The third speaker talks about:-
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
A leader must be selfless and have respect to society bearing in mind that he or she must know his mood of actions and decisions. He must not be disposed to cheating or fraud and sufficient for the purpose to acknowledge his base, but must be goal intended enough not to allow that to influence his opinion formed by judging something.
An emotionally intelligent leader must handle criticisms with the right perspective and must surround himself with smart and trustful associates. As a matter of fact, many politicians in Nigeria today are failures because they surround themselves with sycophants and praise singers which use fake words in disguise to make money from them in the name of praise and with that their edge will rise. A leader must equally be brave enough to acknowledge his mistakes and make amends.
A great leader has the ability to empathize with others and ready to give accolades for impressive gestures and held back by his past when he chooses not to forgive, the leader must learn to forget past hurts for future hopes.
He must be emotionally stable and as such must not allow himself to become a victim of emotional blackmail and mostly, he is able to decode every handwriting on the wall, at every point in time.
It was an eye opener for me because I used to go for other trainings but have not had all this type of words.
We enjoy technology but look down on ideas. We worship our leaders and turn back to cry foul when they load it on us. I wonder if Africa is indeed thinking why our colonial masters who brought Education to Africa introduced only (Reading, writing and arithmetic) leaving aside the most important abstract part of learning which is REASONING.
Too many leaders have a one sided approach to administration due to the act of turning other side of the coin.
In addition, there are some other side that link to leadership just to mention few:
Transparency: By being responsible and accountable at all times without excuses.
Structure: Having a capable platforms and plans to carry out all your duties.
Documentation: Getting things down and done rightly.
Values: Setting the mind of the person with the values you have inside you etc.
Conclusion: Our youth should wake up from sleeping, because "Learning is from the womb to the tomb" we should go for trainings, learn skills, study as if our life depends on it because it does. We should do things that will motivate, inspire us to discover our potentials and develop our abilities because one without knowledge, sincerity, capacity and consistency can not be a leader.
