Der Parfumeur / The parfumer

Yesterday I decided to watch the movie 'der Parfumeur' (The Perfumer). This is a German movie from this year (2022) based on the book 'The Perfume' by the author Patrick Süsskind. The film can be seen on Netflix and very boring! I couldn't watch it anymore and I did that this morning.

What does this movie have in common with the book?
In both there is a perfumer who makes a perfume from the air of (attractive/certain) people. These perfumes have a certain purpose like to be found attractive or to not stand out and that's about it.

In the book, the reader finds himself in the Middle Ages in France. The story is about a baby with no body odor. The boy has an exceptionally good sense of smell and becomes a perfumer. He ingeniously conserves body odors and turns them into perfume.

The film focuses on a detective with no sense of smell. She is confronted with the bodies of women whose hair and sweat glands have been removed. The goal here is to make a love perfume.

While the world of the perfumer and his thinking and working method is described in detail in the book, in the film the story is rushed. There is little depth and the lead actress just doesn't manage to arouse my interest with her story. In addition, something happens that seems very unbelievable to me, presumably this is partly the result of a story without depth. It feels like it's just a brief listing of events. The film is no more than an endless tale of the detective who, thanks to the perfumier, can smell again, but ensures that the one she used still ends up in prison.

If you like to be fascinated read the book instead of watching this boring film.
