We can never forget the movies we watched as children and were influenced by them. Even if it is not very successful in terms of cinematography, it would still be one of the most beautiful films in our opinion because we love it. The Postman is one of the most beautiful and influential films for me.

The Postman is a 1997 post-apocalyptic period film based on the novel of the same name by American author David Brin. In the lead roles of the movie, there are Oscar-winning actor Kevin Costner, who also undertakes the task of directing, as well as Will Patton and Olvia Williams, who can be familiar from the movie Armageddon.

The work is about what happened after the Third World War. America's technology has regressed almost to the level of wild west movies. The established order has collapsed, the state has disappeared and chaos has completely dominated. Some powers, taking advantage of the government vacuum, declared their sovereignty.

The movie begins with a man who makes a living by acting as a stroller and travels towns with his mule. At his last stop, he falls into the hands of the gang known as the Holnists and is captured. This organization is a power and tyrannical power that rose by its own effort after the collapse of the established American government. In fact, the purpose of this organization, which has established an order of its own, is to make a living and live by using resources. However, it is an armed organization that puts pressure on the people in the region and is strongly endorsed. The founder of the organization, General Bethlehem (Will Patton), is a man who took the ideas of a writer named Nathan Holn as a pioneer and made his own way by getting rid of his previous life. He sees her playing Shakespeare plays in a village, but does not dwell on it and monitors the villager. His goal is to get only three soldiers and supplies. However, the Postman is included as a third party without any account.

The ruthlessness within the organization is at its peak. People who are smitten with violence await orders in fear. Since no one dared to oppose, everyone is condemned to be under the same pressure. In fact, if someone who is dissatisfied somewhere makes the first move, he will soon inspire others, even if he is not successful. The postman, on the other hand, spends his days looking for a way out. He is called Shakespeare, and he longs to escape because of the constant ridicule. At this time, when he talks to the General again, he makes his decision, but how will he escape? He gets this opportunity during a hunt. An order is given to search for a lion who is missing and the soldier chasing after him. As he guessed, they send him. When he realizes that the suspension bridge he used to return on the way is broken, he comes to his senses and must flee; jumps and begins his escape. During his escape, he takes shelter in a car to shelter from the rain. He finds a corpse in the car, accompanied by letters. It is clear that it was an accident that happened a long time ago. Our hero leaves there, taking the clothes and letters of the dead man. He decides to use it in the first town he comes across. He says he will deliver the letters, reads the names. When a familiar name is heard, he gets the ticket to salvation. He is now the Postman. But things soon turn out to be different from what he expected. It carries the hope of water in a desert where people are parched in despair; As such, he becomes everyone's favorite. The townsman asks him questions, and he answers. President Richard Starkey, who established the new government, and the Postman who implemented his orders… Hearing these stories, the townspeople begin to write letters. The postman is now a symbol, but not yet aware of it. On top of that, even new postmen appear. He succeeds in that too, but the story does not end there.

The film has two main messages: The first is the fact that the lives of people in the right place at the right time can lead to completely different places. The second is the emphasis on communication. In addition, the social class change that the leading characters are in is also important. Like the general leading the army from an ordinary copyist, or the Postman being promoted from being a traveling theater actor to being a warrior, or even a commander. As a theme, there is an effort to resurrect concepts such as the disintegrated nation and state. For example, it is obvious that the Postman and Abby's baby symbolizes the new state that is being born and fought for. The baby is born and analogically the nation is united. A word from the general gives an idea about the structure of the film. He speaks of a word from the Romans when he stands at the town's gate as a powerful enemy.

"You know what they say to scare your children? Hannibal ad portas, so Hannibal is at our gates..."

In my opinion, the acting of the postman and the leader of the enemy army is very high quality with the subject and concept he describes. It's one of my favorite movies. In the final scene, it is also nice that instead of everyone fighting and killing each other, only the leaders fight and the soldiers make their own decisions. I fell in love with Kevin Costner because of this movie.

Hey man, sorry that I didn't see this until now but you didn't post the link in the contest section. In future contests (if we have them) please make certain to post the link in the comments section.

For some reason I've never heard of this film before, but after reading this I'm adding it to my list of films I need to watch because I like things that are post-apocalyptic.
I watched The Highwaymen recently, which has got Kevin Costner in one of the lead roles. I think he nailed the role of retired Texas Ranger taking on a difficult task of capturing killers on the loose. The film from the 90s I remember, which had Costner in it, is of course one of the most expensive films ever made - Waterworld.
