Review: Cursed

Cursed, the series Netflix has developed from the Thomas Wheeler and Frank Miller novel published last year. This is a story of reinvention based on the events that occurred before the story of King Arthur and his knights came to fruition. But this time the story focuses on Nimue, the traditionally known as Lady of the Lake.

To be a series that tries to break stereotypes, follow some very archetypal steps. She is the one destined to be the light that guides the path of her people. After all, the history of the Excalibur sword is the inspiration for hundreds of stories that follow such classic lines.

Nimue is portrayed by Katherine Langford. The actress who takes on the role of Hannah in Thirteen Reasons Why plays a role here that challenges her in more ways than one and also forces her to move around comfortable terrain or already explored by her. On the one hand her character of Cursed has a pubescent character and on the other hand she has to execute some action scenes. With these scenes it does not develop badly, but with the theme of love and its fears; Let's say you don't go out of the ordinary.

In the case of Arturo, Devon Terrell has been chosen, who played Barack Obama as a young man in Barry. In this new translation of the Arthurian myth, he is not a standard bearer of the ideals of chivalry. For all intents and purposes he is a very different future king of Britain.

For me the most attractive thing about Cursed is the whole part of Merlin. They are the moments most charged with mysticism and legend that goes hand in hand with the excellent work carried out by Gustaf Skarsgård. Better known as Floki in the Vikings series. An example is the part of the king of the lepers with the fire Fey illuminating the corpse of Boudica is worthy of a great story or classic narration.

A good point to see Cursed is the design of some scenarios, not all. There are caves, castles and forests that are going to offer you charged moments of great mythology. Some castrators with an overexploited scene of color, even on the face of the protagonist who can sometimes be shown as if it were a clown.

What you can see from miles away is that it is a series for teenagers. It has a very young cast, full of fears and insecurities, with romances and disappointments. But alert with what they are of sensitive mind that here the swords pierce heads and cut hands. Although I must admit that the black humor that a character uses when he has to heal Vikings has amused me.

Everything happens just like the pages of the original work until the third episode. From there there are moments in common but some plots have been changed to add more importance to other characters. For example, a story of lesbianism has been introduced that the only thing that stands out is that Netflix is also obsessed with forcing political correction.

Both the introduction and the transitional images are illustrated. These are very curious drawings, but they could have used Frank Miller's or at least adopted his style. They are simple drawings as far as detail is concerned, based on silhouettes.

The episodes directed by Zetna Fuentes and Daniel Nettheim do not have prodigious artifices or sequences but they manage to keep us up to date with what is happening. The series has the odd moment or original suggestion, manages to make one feel the other. The series serves to pass the time and more or less to have an idea of the original story, created by Thomas Wheeler and illustrated by Frank Miller.

What a great review of this series. SO far, I have only seen bad reviews (some of them were even posted here in the Netflix and streaming community on Steemit). The one thing in your review that caught my attention is the role of Floki from Vikings as Merlin. I didn't like him in Vikings (his personality), but he sure acted fabulously, so I guess he would be my main motivation for watching this if I ever decided to do so. However, there is so much else I'd rather watch, so I guess I will skip this for now!

Being in someone else's place, it would take me Cursed to understand a bit the story of the original work. The participation of the actor who plays Floki is very good, a little distant from what we would expect from Merlin but even so it is a great point in favor of this series. I highly recommend Vikings, it's great.
