Bo Burnham: Inside - The duplicity of ones self and environment in the mind of a Comedy Genius
Hey Steem Wow it has been a while but its good to be back (in lockdown, so I'm back on here baby).
BUT Wow. Wow. Wow
Just finished the 87 minutes of Massachusetts introspective whimsical protagonist Robert "Bo" Pickering Burnham. And it was magical. Funny, sad, genius, depressing, jaw-dropping, rollercoaster of emotions.
It focuses on Bo starting the special in 2020 during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and how he says that he is going to start making the special and "NOT LEAVE THE HOUSE" until his work is complete.
As he begins with a few songs and skits, you can see how time in the space he films takes over him. BEING INSIDE, AFFECTS HIS INSIDES. You see him at his rawest forms and most brutal underlying messages sneakily hidden within his intelligent songwriting and catchy tunes.
Suffering from serious social anxiety and mental health problems, you can see how the special sometimes takes control of him as he uses it as an output to deal with his lack of activity in a time like 2020. HE NEEDS his special to work on or.....what does he have?.......
AND THEN HE SHOWS YOU WHAT WE HAVE. In this world, the people around us and PICKS THEM CLEAN. All his gags and set ups are homages to greats before him like Jerry Seinfeld, Robin Williams, CK and more with unbelievable observational comedy. Whether its unpaid interns, white women's instagram accounts, billionaires, start up companies, set designers, high budget lighting projects and most importantly....US. THE VIEWERS WHO SUBSIDISE HIS WORK AND DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE WORLD AROUND US AND THE ISSUES GOING ON and just want him to "BE A COMEDIAN".
EVERYTHING, he just tells it how it is and it is magical. You can also tell he has gotten better at songwriting, singing and his production as well. He put blood, sweat and tears and it clearly shows.
AMAZING LIGHTING and use of lighting throughout the special. Tran-SITIONS that are effective and humourful couples with brilliantly catchy hooks. These ambient, large, aesthetically GRAND shots all through this special capture the journey that Bo goes through in 2020 with lights and darks and this is truly magnified in the end to show his emotional capabilities completing the special as he gets closer and closer to finishing.
I laughed, I was sad, I was everything in this special. Bo really knows how to look at the world in the most introspective ways and how to pick the best ways to TAKE THE ABSOLUTE PISS.
But also, he displays how to be true to yourself and how his journey being Inside, helped his own Inside...so when he goes outside....he can do ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING ALL OF THE TIME!!!
