I doubt that in the case of Ellie she doesn't want company, a life partner. It simply went that way. She doesn't seem to be obsessed by her work/art either plus she made a remark about the dog to one of the men.. If the dusabled dog Bing is present to fill the void.
Nowadays many people have a dog as their companion, in my opinion a pet is more of a responsibility, a pet CANNOT replace a person, you can't talk to a dog, you can't exchange ideas, you can't kiss a dog, well there are those who do maybe it's better than kissing a person hahaha.
Conclusion, a pet needs a human, a human DOES NOT need a pet, I prefer to be alone, but in fact we are never alone, there are always people around us, I enjoy being alone surrounded by people, like I said before, I am an endangered species, so DO NOT leave me aside, something like this doesn't happen every day
