Hello Coffe Lovers from Steemit, this time we will not talk about coffee or barismo, we tell you that we were invited by the foundation "Sembrando Para Vivir" that works in our country, to take theoretical-practical courses on planting and compost production to some schools of the city, this, as part of his plan for children to regain their love for the countryside and for the cultivation of plants, both ornamental and fruit trees. We also take the opportunity to teach some concepts of urban organic agriculture, which allow to conserve ecosystems and have food production in the city. We started the activities at the school called "Los Cumanagotos", here, as part of this social work, we bring the knowledge to about 15 children between 8 and 10 years of age, taking the opportunity to tell you that educational work with children is very interesting, for the interest they give to this type of activity and for the sincerity they show when issuing an opinion on a particular issue. Also for the energy they have and the good spirit to carry out any activity.
The day was carried out in two sessions, a theoretical one of about three hours, where we investigated between sheets and exhibitions, the basic concepts of making and maintaining organic compost and some general concepts about the organoponic planting of plants such as paprika and sweet pepper ( the latter is very popular and widely used in Venezuelan gastronomy). We also took the opportunity to deliver the list of materials to the children that they had to bring to do the practice the next day.
The next day, we started with the part that we all like, yes, the practical part. We started the production of organic compost, using the materials that each student managed to collect at home. This elaborate compost, which will be ready to use as fertilizer for plants in about three months, will be under the protection and care of the school. This will be observed weekly by the students who made it, in order to observe the progress of composting.
By making this compost, the children learned the importance of recycling, not only the plastic materials that were used to contain the compost, but also the recycling of organic matter that is discarded in the home kitchen. They also learned that we can put additional use to all this material that would once become stinky and polluting garbage.
After making the compost, we start the part that corresponds to sowing. The main idea of this is that children learn the sowing process by doing it from their homes, also observe the germination process of the seed, the growth of the plant, the flowering and the filling of the fruits and the incidence of any plague or disease that may occur. Once the process was explained, they had to prepare the recycled containers that would serve as a pot, then the earth and then sow the seeds of paprika or chili, which they themselves, according to the explanation given in the theoretical part, had obtained days before at home. Once the seeds were sown, they were watered and each child would then bring their germinator home to care for and observe.
For us, Barista Academy Lecheria was a fabulous experience, to carry out a social work that will allow to give values to the children so that they love nature and are interested in recycling and food production. We believe that this activity that we started in this school is a sowing of values that we will reap in a few years into productive adults for our country.
