Comic BookS Community Introduction
I am Matt S. Law, aka @sidekickmatt here on Steemit and also on Twitter.
I'm an actor, author, artist, game designer, and also comic creator, so I've got a lot going on to keep me busy. Never really thought I was good enough as a comic artist to work in the industry, but starting tomorrow, I've got a table in the Artist Alley at the Amazing Comic Con Aloha here at home in Honolulu. So, I'll be selling some prints of my work. Not sure how well prints sell from totally unknown artists like myself.
Anyway, I'm trying to establish my own little niche to separate myself from the other classically-trained comic artists out there. My style is more like oil painting. I've posted in the past a whole series of DC Vs D&D and Marvel Vs D&D images. I'll re-post some below along with a brand new one that I just finished yesterday. Also, these Avengers prints only strike a nostalgic chord in your heart if you are an old-school 1st edition AD&D gamer....
Avengers Vs White Plume Mountain
Superman Vs Orcus (D&D Demon Prince of Undead)
Aquaman Vs Dagon (D&D Demon Prince of the Depths)
Also, since these take a long time to do I started producing some of these Ty Wilson-style superheroine drawings just so I'd have some more prints at my table.
Who knows, maybe these will sell more than the others. Wish me luck.
The artwork looks great my friend! I see you doing some difficult perspectives on some of these (such as the one with Iron Man), and you did well with it. I hope your convention is a success! Conventions are a lot of fun and great for networking with other artists.
give them hell!!! a comic-con is as level a playing field as you can get...just rows of tables and it's yours vs there's. I've done hundreds of these. One thing I can tell you is to be outgoing. Be friendly, be proud of your work and the effort you put into it. Do not be shy or afraid to say hello to passers-by and ask them to check out your work, and do not be discouraged if they aren't interested, and don't make it awkward for them if they aren't..Just thank them for looking and move onto the next person.
No matter how good you are, some people ain't going to like it. some people ain't going to have extra cash. That's the nature of the beast.
Just keep in mind, you're doing something none of them are or can do.
...they can't do what you do. If someone's looking and seems sorta of interested, introduce yourself, explain how you did it, why you picked that subject, ect.
btw, I like the Daredevil and Electra and Cthulu vs Dr.Fate the best!
Thanks for the tips!
anytime! if you think of any questions leading up to it, don't be shy.
Good luck at the convention! I had every intention of setting up at several this year, but plans aren’t shaping up so well thus far. Enjoy the creative energy. Sales or not, conventions always get me inspired.
Thanks! I have actually never attended a Comic Con. I did go once to Comic Con Honolulu, formerly known as Hoku Con, but I was performing there in a Sci-Fi theater production.
