CPK is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of creatine into phosphocreatine using ATP. Phosphocreatine is utilized an an energy reservoir in tissues with high usage of ATP such as muscles, spermatozoa, photoreceptors of the retina and hair cells of the inner ear. It is also used as a laboratory marker of muscle issue damage (rhabdomyolysis).
