2022 Trip to Korea: Day 3 - Unbelievable 동대문 시장과 국립도서관

I went to Dongdaemun street market which only opens on Sundays. With rain, a few shoppers showed up, which allowed me in a raincoat to stroll leisurely. Many items at unbelievable prices were displayed on temporary stands under the rain veil. For instance, good quality skirts with inner layer, nice design and fabric, and good sewing were less than $2 (at the current USD-KRW exchange rate of 1300). Also, the landscape of the Dongdaemun market looked remarkable to me, who remembered vividly how it looked when I grew up in Seoul*. Unlike the messy and crowded landscape under the overpass where the concrete columns, which seemed more than a hundred times the size of elephants' legs, there are green walking trails next to the clean stream, and high-rise buildings lined up along the brook.

일요일에만 열린다는 동대문 7일장에 갔다. 힌남노 태풍여파로 비가 내렸지만 그래도 장은 열려 있었다. 비 덕분에 사람이 적어 우비를 입고 여유로이 걸어다닐 수 있었다. 믿기지 않는 가격에 많은 물건들이 비를 가리는 장막 아래 가판대 위에 펼쳐져 있었다. 예를 들면, 넓은 가판대 위에 치마가 조금 과장하자면 동네 야산만큼 쌓여있는데, 안감을 넣고 디자인도 예쁘면서 바느질도 꼼꼼히 잘된 치마가 두 개에 5천원이었다. 물건의 가격만큼이나 동네문 시장 주변의 풍경도 놀랍게 변해 있었다. 한국에서 나고 자랄 때 내가 보았던 콘크리트 다리가 코끼리 다리의 열배도 넘을 고가 도로 아래 지저분하고 혼잡했던 풍경과 달리 깨끗한 물이 흐르는 개울물 옆으로 녹음이 우거진 산책로가 있고 물가를 따라 고층 건물들이 늘어서 있다.

Then, I went to the National Library, which I used to go in the 1990s when I was in college. It also transformed unbelievably. Now it has over 13 million books and a separate building of the digital library which boasts over 116 million digital contents and over a quarter million video materials, and is equipped with a UCC production studio, a multi-screen theater, and a high-tech seminar room. The Library also has a book cafe, a convenient store and a restaurant where you can enjoy a healthy meal for less than $4.

다음으론 서초동에 있는 국립도서관에 갔다. 1990년대 대학생 때 종종 가곤 했던 곳이다. 이 또한 몰라보게 변해 있었다. 이젠 1천3백만권 이상의 책을 소장하고 있고 별도로 디지털도서관 빌딩도 갖고 있었는데, 이 디지털 빌딩에 116백만이 넘는 디지털콘텐츠와 25만이 넘는 비디오 자료, UCC 프로덕션 스튜디오, 멀티스크린 영화관과 하이테크 회의실까지 갖춘 곳이란다. 국립도서관은 또한 북카페와 편의점, 식당까지 갖추고 있었는데, 식당에서 5천원짜리 식권을 사서 맛있는 점심을 먹을 수 있었다.
