2022 Trip to Korea: Day 2 in Korea - Unexpected Finding

I woke up in the middle of the night. When I flew to the other side of the world, I always had trouble sleeping at night. As last night's news reported about an upcoming huge typhoon, raindrops outside the window sounded like a skirmish. Its symphony, with the sound of crickets and grass bugs, started wetting my heart. I got up, turned on the light, and opened the door of the bookcase in the room where I was sleeping. Out of old albums and faded books piled up, a thick hardcover book titled Collection of Midang* Poems caught my eye. Thinking it was my father’s, I pulled it out and opened it. Turning on its cover, I found the following note handwritten in the blank space inside the cover.
* Midang, meaning "not yet fully grown", is the pen name of a Korean poet, Seo Jeong-ju (May 18, 1915 – December 24, 2000).

한밤중에 잠이 깼다. 지구 반대편으로 날아온 이튿 날엔 꼭 밤잠을 설친다. 엄청난 태풍이 올라오고 있다고 지난 밤 뉴스에서 보도하더니 그 태풍의 시초인지 빗방울 떨어지는 소리가 들려왔다. 귀뚜라미와 풀벌레들의 소리가 비와 어우러져 마음을 적신다. 불을 켜고 오래된 앨범과 빛바랜 책들이 쌓여 있는 방안 책장 문을 열었다. 두툼한 미당 시전집이 눈에 들어왔다. 책을 좋아하셨던 아빠의 것인가 생각하며 빽빽히 채워져 있는 책들 속에서 빼내어 펼쳤다. 책장을 넘기니 커버 안 빈 여백에서 손으로 쓴 글이 있었다.

Habits are so addictive 습관이란 참 고약하기도 하지
Even if you know it’s not right, you'll get used to it 아니다 싶다가도 이내 익숙해져
Being able to live as if nothing happened 아무일 없듯 살아갈 수 있다는 것이

In a city covered in thick concrete like keratin, 두터운 콘크리트 각질에 쌓인 도시
amid countless strangers 수없는 낯선 사람들 속에서
things you hardly want 별로 원치 않는 일들을
you can continue to live until you die 죽을 때까지 하며 살 수 있다는 것이

So we may drink or 그래 우리는 술을 마시고
read a few lines of poetry 몇 줄 시를 읽는지도 모른다
in order not to go crazy or 미치지 않기 위해
to go crazy 미치기 위해

Still 그래도
As happy 온몸 세포 하나하나가 살아 움직이듯
as every cell in my body seems alive 기분 좋은 날
