In today's post, I would like to tell you about a place that is particularly dear to me, it is quite close to my home, and when I have a little time I always go for a walk in that place there, it is called Borghetto sul Mincio, and for many people it has become the village of love, Hey because it is a beautiful village of houses that was built on the banks of the river Mincio.
Borghetto, is a hamlet of the municipality of Valeggio sul Mincio, and this hamlet has always been important for various reasons, both historical and scenic, which is why it has also been included in the association of the most beautiful hamlets in Italy. As you can see from the photos, this hamlet was born in symbiosis with the river itself and was probably once a fortification because it was located in a very important urbanistic point of view.
In fact, the historic centre of the village still has its characteristic medieval appearance. Walking through the village, one is right in touch with this history, but also with nature, since this river practically passes underneath the village, and in fact there are still water mills in the village, which were probably used in history to grind the wheat or cereals that were cultivated nearby.
As you can also see from the photo, the village is located right next to the famous Scaligero castle of Valeggio sul Mincio.
Thanks to this characteristic atmosphere that makes this place very fairytale-like, over the years it has become a very romantic place where lovers perhaps come here to eat something and then hang up the classic padlock to seal their love.
In fact, many people hang their padlocks here near this characteristic mill, I remember that a few years ago there were very few, now there are many.
This beautiful place, nestled in the morainic hills, is just a few kilometres away from Lake Garda, which I have already told you about in other posts, and this place, in addition to being a place dedicated to love, has unfortunately also been a place of battles because it was here that many wars against Napoleon took place, as well as the famous wars of the Risorgimento period that led to the creation of the Kingdom of Italy.
In the 1950s, Borghetto sul Mincio was a film set where some scenes of the famous film senso by Luchino Visconti were shot, which older people will certainly remember, because it was a great success.
In the 1900s, Borghetto began a restoration project because unfortunately most of the houses had been partly abandoned, and in the redevelopment, several public places and many hotels and bed and breakfasts were born and are available to tourists arriving from all over the world.
