Elephant Grass

A few days ago when I was on a trip with my family, I saw a field that was planted with elephant grass. Its scientific name is Pennisetum purpureum.

This elephant grass is indeed widely planted by breeders and farmers on vacant land or land that is less suitable for agriculture, such as land that is too sloping or in gardens filled with woody plants. Such land is certainly not good if planted with vegetables that require fertile, loose land and direct sunlight with intensive care. Elephant grass is indeed able to play a role in preserving soil and water. So that this grass has a dual function, namely the ability to help prevent erosion and can also be used as animal feed.

Planting and maintenance is quite easy, that is, just plug the mature stems of this plant (cuttings) in the land in the rainy season, then in a few days shoots will grow and then continue to grow. If planted in the dry season, it can be watered with water so that the soil is wet and the stems continue to grow, not dying from drought.

So it will be more profitable if such less productive land is planted with elephant grass because in general pre-farmers also keep livestock such as goats or cows.

Elephant grass is indeed very good for livestock such as cows and buffalo. In addition to the size of the leaves and stems are larger than other grasses, making it filling, the content of this grass is also very good because it contains dry matter; crude protein, crude fiber and a little ash. This content is needed by ruminants such as cattle or buffalo for growth.
