KFC (short for Kentucky Fried Chicken), is an American fast food restaurant chain headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, that specializes in fried chicken. It is the second largest restaurant chain in the world (measured by sales) after McDonald's, with 22,621 locations globally in 150 countries as of December 2019. The restaurant chain is a subsidiary of Yum! Brands, a restaurant company that also oversees Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and WingStreet.
Kebab is a cooked meat dish, with Middle Eastern origins. Many variants are popular all over the world.
In most English-speaking countries, a kebab may be a classic shish kebab or souvlaki – small cubes of meat cooked on a skewer or, in North America it is known as a gyros while outside fast food North America it is known as a doner kebab. In contrast, in Indian English, Bangladeshi English, British, Pakistani and in languages in the Middle East, other parts of Asia, and the Muslim world, kebab is one of many grilled meat dishes. Some dishes that ultimately derive from Middle Eastern kebabs may have different names in their local language, such as Chinese chuan.
Kebabs consist of chopped or ground meat, sometimes with vegetables, and various other accompaniments according to a specific recipe. Although kebabs are usually cooked on a skewer over a fire, some kebab dishes are grilled in a frying pan in the oven or prepared as a stew like kebab bags. The traditional meat for kebabs is most often mutton or lamb, but regional recipes may include beef, mutton, chicken, fish, and sometimes pork due to religious prohibitions.
The name kebab comes from Arabic: kabab (کباب) which originally meant fried meat, not grilled/grilled meat. The word kabab probably comes from the Aramaic: kabbābā which may be from the Akkadian: kabābu meaning "grill, roast". In the 14th century, kebab became synonymous with tabahajah, a dish of deep-fried cuts of meat in Persian. In Turkish books, the term kebab is often used for meatballs made from minced chicken or lamb. The new term kebab means a grilled meat dish (shish kebab) since the time of the Ottoman Empire, but there is another, more ancient term for grilled meat, namely shiwa` (شواء ) of Arabic origin. However, kebabs are still used in their original sense in dishes such as stews, such as the Turkish kebab (kebab in a bowl) bag. In Egyptian cuisine there is a beef and onion stew called kebab halla.
