Weekend Freewrite -2/29/2020 - Three Parts (though not as designed)

in Freewriters4 years ago (edited)

Really good challenge @mariannewest! I missed some details and thus didn't quite understand the challenge for this one at first. I took "the interference" and "the conflict" as prompts. It wasn't until I finished and reread the instructions, that I realized the prompts weren't included yet.

Prompt 1: The First Sentence

Kurt was a huge, comfortable man, whose body dropped fast into any inviting spaces.

And this trait became really handy when he moved to the City. You see he loved crowds. His size did not deter him—it gave him the momentum to push through when he needed to.

But not when he went to the Magic Kaingdom. There he let the magic take him. He would always hit the Main Gates when there promised to be the most crowds. And today was no different.

Only this time, he had invited someone special with him. Someone he had gotten to know over the last few months. Some who had never discovered the magic of the Resort.

And his plan was to wow her, be her knight in shining armor, throughout the day.

Should he dare to ask Jenn for her hand in marriage?

Hmmm. Maybe. It didn’t seem right, or at least it didn’t feel like the right timing. Because it was the first visit for her. What if she didn’t enjoy it like he did?

He shut this idea down, because their passions has matched in so many ways already. “Compatibility” is the word she used.

They seemed to walk in step with all things in life that mattered - politics, religion, importance of family.

Hey why not the Magic Kingdom?

Prompt 2 - The interference. It will direct your story into a new direction.

Kurt has gotten everything ready and he was to pick up Jenn at her apt at 6:30 sharp. They wanted to make there in time for rope drop, which meant they should be scannned into the gates before 8.

Jenn didn’t even flinch at the early hour. In fact she loved it. She was bright eyed and excited to see what the day held for them. For some reason, it was her first time to the Park, but she knew she would love it.

They grabbed breakfast and coffee along the way and both were in sync. Conversation was rich, light and happy. Stories were shared. Laughter had, the morning sped by.

Kurt began forming a plan in his mind. He has stashed the ring in the locker with their belongings. When should he retrieve?

His scheming interrupted by Jenn’s phone.

Harry knew immediately that something off when he heard a quiver in Jenn’s voice. “My dad,” she mouthed.

“What could it be?” Thoughts raced through Kurt’s mind. Jenn walked away a bit toward the Riverboat to get away from the crowd.

Prompt 3 - the conflict. The third part is a dramatic twist.

“I have to go.” Jenn’s eyes locked on his, beseeching, pleading for him to understand.

“It’s my mom. An accident. She’s in the emergency room and my dads falling apart.”

“I have to go.”

Kurt immediately sprang into action, spilling his shake. Assuring her with no hesitation in spite of the accident. I take you right away.

They made their way out of AdventureLand to their locker on Main Street. Grabbing their items, Jenn rummaged through Kurt’s bag for Wet Whips. Her eyes spotted the small box tucked away...

Kurts eyes widened he froze. “Noooo!” “This isn’t right! Not part of the plan.”

“Jenn...,” his voice creaked.

“Kurt? What’s this?”

“Please don’t ask.” Shaking his head. How could he!

They didn’t notice a cast member happen upon them a few minutes earlier.

Seeing them pack up, she approached and struck a conversation, genuine care in her voice.

The words spilled out of Jenn. Their magical morning. The phone call. Her mom. This box.

-- 5 minutes up.

The cast member reached into her pocket. “Here,” she offered, pulling out two silver passes.

“Please come back when you’ve had time with your mom.”

Kurt and Jenn are speechless. This couldn’t be. No words exchanged. The cast member's eyes beckoning Jenn to accept her gift.

"These are for you,” she said, gently, but firm.

Jenn took them and slid them back and forth in between her fingers. Her eyes brimming with tears.

“I can't believe this! Thank you!”

“My pleasure.”

Kurt and Jenn made their way to his car in the parking ramp and sped to the hospital.

Jenn’s mom made it through the ordeal, though scarred and needing extensive physical therapy.

Kurt and Jenn used their gifted silver tickets. First thing, he dropped to one knew, asked, and she said, "Yes!"
