This ancient sports held annually during the yearly festival of clans was one thing the gentle prince detested. He was more of an aesthetic person who was more concerned with art and music. How was he to tell his father, who was a champion of this sport in his own time, that he has no interest in participating. He feared what his father would think of him. He didn't want to be thought of as being weak. His best friend understands his view as he assures him that everyone must not like the same thing. His mother however advises him to brace himself for the game if he must prove himself a worthy successor of his father's throne. She didn't want him to be seen as weak, scared or effeminate. He may not have a choice. It's one of the sacrifices one has to make in order to retain what is his.
