Shelf are of different types, and basically for different use. I was surprised seeing this kind of shelf in the image above. From my mind, I had assumed that shelf keeps books and not more, maybe they can still accommodate a few things kept on the shelf but inside is for books. But things has changed, we now see shelf made for various purposes, some even for special reasons, and it's a good thing.
