Another Temple, more horrible skin conditions

Today's doggy adventure takes us to Krabi Noi temple and the unfortunately discovery of another 20 dogs or so, all of which have varying degrees of horrible-ness as far as their skin conditions are concerned.

We always know that these sorts of things exist and we are always a little sad when we see how bad it has gotten and try to keep our cool when it comes to the fact that it seems as though no one is doing anything about it. This all boils down a number of things but mainly because the standpoint of Thai culture is one of relative indifference when it comes to whether or not the dog is in pain or is suffering.

It's not that the monks or the visitors here don't care, it's that as far as I can tell, they are already doing what they believe to be the right thing as far as providing the animals with shelter and food on a regular basis and from that perspective, yes, it is dramatically better than what the alternative would be.

We knew there would be a bunch of dogs here because basically every temple in Thailand has a large number of dogs that the monks are looking after but we hadn't thought there would be this many of them.

One of the really cool things about temple dogs is that they tend to be a lot more friendly than your run of the mill homeless dog living on the street somewhere and much of this is probably because they are accustomed to many strangers coming by on a daily basis.

Even before it was made known to the dogs that Heinrich had come with food they gathered around his truck, tails a wagging and were extremely friendly. Once it was revealed that he also had yummy food with him the attitude became even more loving.

This is what I and many other people love about dogs: Despite the fact that they have been dealt a bad case in life they don't let that get in the way of their ability to feel joy and the simple act of being touched and given a little bit of food absolutely delights them.

This is a stark contrast to some of the street animals that have been kicked around and lived their lives in fear basically since day one. From a purely selfish point of view the temple dogs are much easier to handle because of this. Although they are in a terrible state they have been treated with care and compassion; as much as was possible by the monks and visitors to the temple.

There were around 20 dogs here and those were just the ones that we spotted when we stopped by to have a look to see how bad the situations was since we feel as though we have the situation under control to a certain degree at the other 2 temples that we are currently working with. We are really going to have our work cut out for us because we haven't even started to develop a plan as far as sterilization of the animals here are concerned, which is something we are going to have to get started on as soon as possible.

The extremely moist and humid conditions that come along with rainy season always make the skin problems worse but thankfully because of a generous gift not that long ago, we actually have more than enough Bravecto at the moment to treat all of them. The trick right now is to make sure that each dog gets only one dose, which can be difficult since some dogs are more likely to eat just whatever you give them than others are and we need to treat them all or we risk reinfection from untreated animals in the future.

This is going to be a very big project but it must be done because some of the animals, such as the one pictured first, are in a really terrible state that must be tended to immediately. I am hopeful that this project will show great results in a short amount of time after seeing how effective this product is at treating a wide spectrum of skin problems with all dogs.
