The US military said in a statement Tuesday that the countries will employ a total of nearly 40 surface ships, four submarines and 170 aircraft, involving some 25,000 troops.

The United States and other nations are insisting on these exercises as China is expanding its reach in the region including the militarization of islands in the disputed South China Sea, three nations with opposing maritime territorial claims to China, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei and are among those participating in RIMPAC 2022.

According to the US Navy, the maneuvers will include various exercises as well as anti-piracy operations, mine clearance operations, explosives disposal, and diving and salvage operations. But in truth, these exercises are to deter aggression from China and North Korea, among others.
