The coronation of Elizabeth II

Yesterday was the anniversary of the coronation of Elizabeth II (2 June 1953). College of Arms published an amazing article on preparation of the ceremony with some details from the College archives (you can find it here https://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/news-grants/news/item/84-planning-the-coronation).

The one-day ceremony took 14 months of preparation. The ceremony falls under the jurisdiction of the Earl Marshal, one of the Great Officers of State. Physical preparations and decorations were the responsibility of David Eccles, Minister of Works. Eccles described his role and that of the Earl Marshal: "The Earl Marshal is the producer – I am the stage manager..."

This drawing shows one of the floor plans with all the details for protocol officers who assisted the ceremony.

The Coronation ceremony of Elizabeth II followed a similar pattern to the coronations of the kings and queens before her, except the technology: it was broadcast live.

The design of the Queen's gown was created by Norman Hartnell. It was a white silk dress embroidered with floral emblems of the countries of the Commonwealth: the Tudor rose of England, Scottish thistle, Welsh leek, shamrock for Northern Ireland, wattle of Australia, maple leaf of Canada, the New Zealand silver fern, South Africa's protea, two lotus flowers for India and Ceylon, and Pakistan's wheat, cotton and jute.
