Fishermans from Florianópolis - Fishing Moments - Written & Photography Contest [ENG|POR]

Hello my friends!
Today I bring you a little of the local history of Florianópolis. An incredibly beautiful island, known as "Island of Magic" or simply Floripa.
Floripa was colonized by Azoreans and fishing is rooted in its culture and history. During the first centuries of colonization, around the 18th and 19th centuries, the main economic activity was whaling, which had its end decreed in the mid-1960s.But until today, the most used vessels are the so-called "baleeiras" which mean "whaling boats", handcrafted in wood and with a rounded shape so that the vessel would not tip when they were hunting these huge animals.
Curious fact: the boats were small and carried between 10 and 12 men, the whales were harpooned with harpoons thrown by hand and with dynamite tied to the ends.

Whale fishing is currently prohibited and year after year the number of these animals that visit the local coast grows.

Even so, artisanal fishing remains strong and turns the economy of small neighborhoods. That's why it is possible to find fishermen all over the island and the cliffs are usually full on certain dates or days with specific weather for fishing for a specific species. Tainha (fish very popular in the region) for example, usually pass along the coast of the region between the months of May and July, the squid usually appear in February, on clear nights with a full moon it is time for shrimp fishing.
The city breathes fishing and local cuisine is practically all based in seafood.

The photographs below are photographs by Von Lecram and Nicolas Carreiro (Photocracia), accumulated during the years lived in Florianópolis, where we fished, photographed and ate a lot of fish.
This month we are returning to live in Floripa and we are already looking forward to eating a delicious tainha.

Olá meus amigos!
Hoje trago um pouco da história local de Florianópolis. Uma ilha incrivelmente linda, conhecida como "Ilha da Magia" ou simplesmente Floripa.
Floripa foi colonizada por Açorianos e tem enraizada a pesca em sua cultura e história. Durante os primeiros séculos de colonização, por volta do século XVIII e XIX, a principal atividade econômica era a pesca de baleias a qual teve seu fim decretado em meados de 1960. Porém até hoje as embarcações mais utilizadas são as chamadas "baleeiras", construidas artesanalmente em madeira e com formato arredondado para que a embarcação não virasse quando estivessem caçando esses enormes animais.
Fato curioso: as embarcações eram pequenas e levavam entre 10 e 12 homens, as baleias eram arpoadas com arpões atirados com a mão e com dinamite amarrada nas pontas.

A pesca das baleias atualmente é proibida e ano a ano cresce o número destes animais que visitam a costa local.

Ainda assim a pesca artesanal segue forte e gira a economia de pequenos bairros. Por isso é possível encontrar pescadores por todos os bairros da ilha e os costões costuma ficar cheios em determinadas datas ou em dias de clima especifico para a pesca de alguma espécie específica. As Tainhas (peixe muito apreciado na região) por exemplo, costuma passar pelo litoral da região entre os meses de maio e julho, as lulas costumam aparecer no mês de fevereiro, em noites claras de lua cheia é tempo de pesca de camarão.
A cidade respira pesca e a culinaria local e praticamente toda a base de frutos do mar.

Neste mês estamos voltando a morar em Floripa e já estamos ansiosos para comer uma deliciosa tainha.
