Saludos estimados amigos de thesteemitcity! Hoy quisiera compartir con ustedes un poco de la principal devoción de muchos en mi ciudad.

Greetings dear friends of thesteemitcity! Today I would like to share with you a bit of the main devotion of many in my city.

Estoy hablando de la peregrinación de San Benito de Palermo, "el santo negro" este venerable santo que vivió en Italia en los años 1500 y que fue santificado un par se siglos después. Se convirtió en toda una figura que agrupa a toda la población de Cabimas y pueblos aledaños en la Costa Oriental del Lago de Maracaibo en el Zulia Venezuela.

I'm talking about the pilgrimage of St. Benedict of Palermo, "the black saint" this venerable saint who lived in Italy in the 1500's and was sanctified a couple of centuries later. He became a figure that brings together the entire population of Cabimas and surrounding towns on the East Coast of Lake Maracaibo in Zulia Venezuela.

Se relata que en el año 1922 en diciembre, cuando hubo el reventón del pozo barroso 2 que fue el inicio de la explotación petrolera, ese pozo estuvo lanzando petroleo por los aires durante día y noche sin parar por una semana, lo que mantenía en vilo a la comunidad aledaña, quienes desesperados por que cesara este asunto, llevaron a unos chimbangles (tambores con los que se baila al santo) para pedir porque se parara el reventon.

It is said that in the year 1922 in December, when there was the blowout of the Barroso 2 well, which was the beginning of oil exploitation, that well was launching oil into the air day and night without stopping for a week, which kept the surrounding community in suspense, who desperate for this matter to stop, took some chimbangles (drums with which the saint dances) to ask for the blowout to stop.

Su plegaria se cumplió y desde entonces en Cabimas y pueblos cercanos las procesiones en honor a San Benito congregan a ,muchas personas y en su honor se ha levantado una capilla en el municipio santa Rita específicamente en el sector de puerto escondido donde la imagen del santo adorna la plazoleta al frente de la iglesia en su honor.

Their prayer was fulfilled and since then in Cabimas and nearby towns the processions in honor of San Benito congregate many people and in his honor a chapel has been erected in the municipality of Santa Rita specifically in the sector of Puerto Escondido where the image of the saint adorns the small square in front of the church in his honor.
