I am a Farmer and I am Working

There are many professions in this world, however the noblest to me is farming. You know very well that the first job man got was to till the soil. Farming is the key to human sustenance. So naturally I have a strong liking for farming.

If you check my profile you will notice it is stated farmer, soil scientist. As such I am both a farmer by nature and by qualification. I know many trained farmers today only have theoretical knowledge. This is why I so much love this contest. At least I get a chance to show that I practice what I profess.

Over the years, right from childhood I have found myself severally in the farm. From cultivating the small plots around the home to very extensive massive of land, I have learned to plant a variety of crops. These include, maize, cassava, yam, cocoyam, fruited pumpkin, okro, gnectum and a host of other crops.

Basically these crops are grown for subsistence purposes. Occasionally, with pressing need and abundance, some of our farm produce have been sold out for income.

So, in crop production I can tell you all that I boost of significant knowledge and experience.

It is not just crop farming that I major on. Fortunately for me, my father use to operate a poultry. Here, he raised both broiler and layer birds from day old chicks to maturity.

Consequently, from the brooding, to feeding, to medication and general husbandry of poultry, I can comfortably handle them.

I remember that somewhere in between, we had about 10 or so number of turkeys, though it was not a major enterprise in the farm.

Going forward, my years of training in the university as a soil scientist, I was exposed to deeper knowledge of all these areas of farming and agriculture as a whole. As such, farming has markedly punctuated my life on all angles.

Therefore, taking into account my early exposure to farming right from childhood with my parents and grandparents, also indexing my formal training and practice, I can submit that a great farmer lies within me.

Constantly, I embark on one farming endeavor or another, mostly for the passion and also for the thrills and benefits. The farmer is me is working assiduously.
