Taiwan is hit by its strongest earthquake in nearly 25 years

in NutBox2 months ago

A powerful earthquake struck eastern Taiwan on Wednesday morning, causing widespread damage and triggering tsunami warnings in nearby countries.

The 7.4 magnitude quake, the strongest to hit Taiwan since 1999, struck near the city of Hualien at around 7:58 am local time. Buildings collapsed, power outages affected thousands, and landslides blocked roads.

At least seven people were confirmed dead and many more injured. Authorities suspended work and school in Hualien, a city of about 300,000 residents.

Strong shaking was felt in the capital, Taipei, located roughly 100 miles away. Reports indicate the tremor was even perceptible in Shanghai, China, approximately 500 miles north of the epicenter.

Widespread Damage and Evacuations

Images showed significant damage to buildings, with some structures tilted precariously after being shaken loose from their foundations.

Taiwan's leading microchip manufacturer, TSMC, reportedly evacuated production lines following the quake. Transportation across the island was disrupted, with train and subway services suspended.

Tsunami Warnings Lifted

Initial tsunami warnings issued by Japan were later lifted after a small wave measuring about one foot was observed on a nearby island. The Philippines also issued precautionary warnings for coastal areas, which were later lifted as well.

Taiwan's History of Earthquakes

This earthquake is the strongest to hit Taiwan since the devastating 1999 "Jiji" earthquake, which measured 7.3 magnitude and claimed over 2,400 lives.
