Contest Review Tools Account Recovery Steemworld.org Session 8th by @ubongudofot
INTRODUCTION
First of I hate it whenever I hear that an account has been compromised or that valuable details are lost due to one reason or another. Because of this, I took time to invest my time and resources in cyber security in other to become technically fit to handle situations when it comes to digital account compromise or loss of log-in details. So when I first saw this contest organized by @amryksr a few days ago, I was so overwhelmed with joy. I wish many folks spend time to read more details about this, because, this will really help them to be conscious or alert in their steemit accounts.
It isn’t funny to say that I knew about steemworld.org just recently after many months of joining the steemit platform and I am pretty much sure that a lot of steemians still haven’t known about this, apart from their regular postings of publications here on the steemit platform. I wish I could publicize this contest the way I want so that it will reach many steemians eyes.
What will I cover in this article, you may ask? Well, what I will cover are these sub-topics listed below:
- What is account Recovery?
- What are the steps to take in other to recover the account?
Please read my contribution or input to this contest below.
WHAT IS ACCOUNT RECOVERY?
Account recovery can be defined as a process of getting back a compromised or lost digital account. It could be your email, it could be your social media account, it could be your game account, or any other digital account. But for the sake of this article, I am going to be focusing on the steemit platform.
So, the recovery account is another account or section in the Steemit world which has the ability to recover a steemian account, in case a user requests for it after an account has been compromised.
Step 1
WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT OF RECOVERY?
First of all, I would be using the steemworld.org feature known as Account Recovery. You can use that as well to check which account is set as your recovery account by visiting steemd.com/username, for example, mine is Steem, which means, steemit is my recovery account. This step is very necessary.
Note that this can be changed as well to another account, but that person must be trusted and always available whenever you need him or her, especially during the recovery process.
The essence of having this account is so that, if an account is compromised or the log-in details of the account are lost, it would be easier to forward the new log-in details and keys to this account.
Step 2
CREATE A NEW MASTER SECURITE PASSWORD TO RECEIVE NEW KEYS
Before considering this second step a user needs to contact his/her recovery account and send such user a new public owner key for the account which he/she wants to recover. After that is done, the person handling the recovery account must verify that this request of recovering account is coming from the real owner which is you. There is nothing bad about putting a phone call to confirm from him/he because a lot of people makes mistake in this section. Please don’t be a victim, make sure you confirm the authenticity of the real owner before any further steps.
When the above is done, then the recovery account starts processing an account recovery request with the lost account username and the new public owner key you sent to him/her.
Step 3
After that is done, you as the real owner can now go ahead with the account recovery using a recent public owner key. At a point, you will be requested for the recent private owner key that was sent earlier on and then your new private owner key in other to confirm the authenticity.
CONCLUSION
Even though this process is possible, it is still advisable that we need to be alert and careful not to allow our keys to be stolen or our account to be compromised. But if for any reason we notice that our account is compromised, it would be good that we take action immediately. Remember, after the recovery, please safe or store your new master key/password in a safe place.
