Steemit Engagement Challenge S5-W2: Natural Disaster In My Place
My dear friends, since October 12th, Sri Lanka has experienced torrential rain, lightning, and strong winds, which have caused floods and landslides as well as caused fatalities. As a result, thousands of homes and structures have flooded. The Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology forecasts further showers and severe gusts until October 19. In addition, infrequent showers and thundershowers are predicted for the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central Provinces, as well as the Galle and Matara Districts.
The Aththanagalu and Kelani rivers' rising water levels have caused floods in my hometown of Gampaha and most of the area in Western Province. Although the water didn't affect me, the flood and strong winds did for the bulk of the homes in the Gampaha region.
The current weather is probably going to cause transportation problems all around the country. Traffic and commercial transportation cause delays on regional roads. In areas with inadequate drainage, some low-lying roads could become drowned during torrential downpours.
According to the Disaster Management Centre of Sri Lanka, this current crisis has impacted 15,404 families across 52 Divisional Secretariats. According to reports, the island's present bad weather conditions are to blame for most deaths and injuries. Some homes were completely destroyed, while others only received minimal damage. Only in the Gampaha Division, where flooding on October 14 displaced 3,666 people, and the Ja-ela Division, where 487 people were displaced.
The Sri Lanka Red Cross's emergency response team from the Colombo branch is on the ground assisting those going through trying circumstances. The Sri Lankan Army personnel are also aiding in getting through these difficult times to the affected people.
The President of Sri Lanka has directed all district secretaries to coordinate the assistance efforts for individuals impacted by the current inclement weather with the aid of the Disaster Management Center. The necessary money has been allocated by the ministry of finance, and officials have been told to grant impacted people access to all services, including food and medicine.
When there has been flooding, it is imperative to make an effort to stay out of the water. You should comply if the police or other emergency services urge you to leave because doing so will be very helpful. If flooding is a problem at your home, contact the local authority right away for assistance. Watch out for senior, family-oriented, and young family neighbors as well. Do not touch the fuse box to turn off the electricity if there is water inside or around the fuse box; instead, call a professional. Look around the home and take out any damaged electrical equipment.
