Stories and Myths from Takht-i-Bahi.

Takht-i-Bahi is not just a historical site it is also surrounded by legends. One of the stories i haves heards from my elders is about a hiddens treasures buried some where in the hills of Takht-i-Bahi. According to the legend Buddhist monks hid gold and valuables artifacts in the hills when they left the monasterys. People believe this treasure is guarded by invisible spirits who protect it from those who come with selfish intentions. Only the pure hearted the story says can find the treasure. Though no one has ever found it the mystery adds to the charm of the site.

Another tale speaks of a magical spring that once existed in Takht-i-Bahi. It was said that this spring had healing powers and that people would travel great distances to drink from it. Elders say that the spring dried up as the world changed but the ground where it flowed still holds some of its energy. Some people still visit the site and sit near the old spring location hoping to feel the peaceful energy it once had.

The Legend of the Bajaur River.

Mardan’s history is not just about Takht-i-Bahi. The nearby Bajaur River also has its own legends. In ancient times it was said that this river brought gold dust from the mountains and people along its banks would pan for gold. Villagers tell stories of how their ancestors found bits of gold in the river which brought fortune to those lucky enough to live nearby. Though the river no longer carries gold the legend has become a part of local folklore reminding people of the prosperity the river once symbolized.
