INTRODUCTION

what is gender?
We constantly use the words “sex” and “gender” interchangeably, but this is inaccurate. Sex and gender are distinct from each other, and we must understand this.

“Sex” pertains to the physical variations between people who are masculine, feminine, or intersex. These are traits typically assigned from birth based on physiological factors, including their genitalia and chromosome makeup. This is medically known as a person's “natal sex.”

Gender, on the other hand, pertains to how a person identifies in a society. Contrary to the natal sex, gender is not made up of two aspects. Instead, gender is a vast scope. An individual may identify within this scope or out of it entirely.

In our society today, an individual may identify with genders that are varied from their natal sex or with none at all. Such identities may include Transgender, nonbinary, or gender-neutral. There exist several other ways in which an individual may interpret his/her gender.

Also, Gender on a social level can be defined as “roles” or “norms.” These are defined as the socially established roles, behaviours, and moralities that society deems reasonable and acceptable for girls, women, boys, men, or gender-diverse people.

DOES GENDER PLAY A ROLE IN OUR EVERYDAY LIFE?

Gender extensively influences how civilization perceives themselves and each other, how they behave and interact, and the distribution of power and resources in the community.

There is significant diversity in how people and groups understand, experience and convey gender through the positions they take on, the expectations placed on them, their associations with others and the intricate ways that gender is thought of in society.

Our society retains a set of notions about how we expect girls, boys, men and women to dress, behave, conduct and present themselves based upon their assigned sex.

An example is how we expect girls and women to dress in conventionally feminine ways and be respectful, putting up, and nurturing. While Men are mainly required to be strong, assertive, and fierce.

Society expects women to take care of the kids, cook, and clean the home, while men take care of finances, work on the car, and do home repair works.

Some are quick to conclude that educators, nannies and nurses are women and that captains, doctors, architects and engineers are men.

HOW DOES THE ROLE OR FUNCTION IN YOUR COUNTRY DIFFER FROM GENDER TO GENDER?

Each society, ethnic faction, and culture has specific gender role expectations. Even though, their views can be different from one group to another. An example of this is how pink is considered a masculine colour while blue was considered feminine in the U.S.

Like in every other society, Nigeria is not left out of the discussion. As it is a general belief in most parts of Nigeria, especially the Northern part, that the woman must do all the domestic work and remain just a housewife. She is to cook, wash, reproduce and take care of the family while it's a must for the man to go out and fend for the family.

For the guys, am sorry but there are some of us, even as educated as we are is part of it. to the point, some even believe it is right for an educated working woman who earns x2 of the man's salary to stop working after marriage.

Some Ethnic groups even take it upon themselves that a woman has nothing to say in a family meeting no matter their level of intelligence and knowledge.

Women are also forbidden from certain activities in society, which they have termed to be "A man's Work".

But looking at Nigeria, the Females have made us proud on the global stages too, look what Tobi and Brume are doing, then there are the Super falcons and many more.

IS IT THE SAME FOR OTHER COUNTRIES?

Permit me to say, I may not know. As I've been in Nigeria all my life, one thing I know is that every society or nation has its roles and activities pencilled out for the various genders. This could be based on;

PERSONALITY TRAITS: That is often expecting women to be accommodating and subjective, while men are to be self-confident and fierce.

DOMESTIC BEHAVIOURS: This involves expecting women to take care of the children, cook, and clean the home, while the men take care of finances.

OCCUPATIONS: Assuming women to be good only as teachers and nurses and Men as pilots, doctors, engineers etc.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Expecting women to be thin and elegant, while men are to be tall and muscular. And expecting men to wear pants and short hairstyles, and women to wear dresses and make-up.

WHAT ABOUT STEEMIT?

Steemit is a social platform where no one knows who the next person is, be it male or female, you certainly can't tell who's behind the accounts by mere usernames or profile pictures. Thus, from the best of my knowledge, it's pretty free for everyone to air their opinions without constraint so I guess it's equal. Besides, it's the females I look up to more.

CONCLUSION

There are no limits to what we humans can achieve regardless of our gender, so why put a constraint on that using gender?

Gender roles are mostly caused by social beliefs and conceptions that have been in use for a long time. Genders and gender roles are not always clear-cut classifications that can be applied to everyone in the community. As this can steer people to think that those who do not conform neatly to the set gender roles might be flawed, which may lead to problems such as discrimination or mistreatment. Thus, Gender should be understood as behaviours and personal identifications that prevail along a scope. This problem in society can be solved if the media show more relatable, positive portrayals of people who do not follow traditional gender roles.

hi @sahmi greetings from @prilly, I have read your article, basically God created humans in pairs to complement each other, the term men protect women women respect men, as humans we need each other and complement each other.

Very true. That is what makes the topic a very sensitive one. But, men imposing themselves to confined women to a certain degree is insane and it needs to be corrected.

I agree with you sahmi.

Thank you.

You have written beautifully and I must commend your effort in presenting your submission via this entry. You also mentioned the excesses we tend to see in the society as it relates to this topic. Where do we start correcting the errors from? Well maybe with the younger generation. Thanks for sharing.

I can only hope you had a great time going through it. Thank you for you kind words.

Great addressing of topic for gender. Of course nowadays this is used to be defined for certain rules and norms that have to be changed without problem between them. Good luck with your entry. Receive my regards from Latin America friend.🌎

some even believe it is right for an educated working woman who earns x2 of the man's salary to stop working after marriage.

Some people are very unreasonably silly with the decisions they decide to impose on their wives. This is so common in Africa, they begin to feel insecure a times.

I agree with you on your say with respect to steemit, because steemit is a decentralized platform at all its stages.

Thank you for sharing, good luck and i invite you to my entry.

This is the society we seem to have found ourselves. Unreasonable set of humans. Although we still have some good ones. Thank you for your encouraging words.

Thank you for always making out the time. I really appreciate it.

Gender equality is now regulated in law and the government is trying hard to ensure that everyone's rights are fulfilled fairly, we also see that gender equality is now wider and people's thinking is also progressing.
Good luck for the contest....

You have actually done a good job here dear, @sahmie. This issue has continued to create unnecessary controversy and confusion in our country even our homes, where women are mostly at the receiving end. I know it's not a crime to be identified with a particular gender whether strong, weak, prosperous or average. All that matters is that you are contributing your quota in any angle you have chosen to represent. Let love rule.

Definitely, let love lead. Thank you for you kind words.
