Natural Calamities in Bangladesh

Cyclone is a natural calamity. It is a violent storm. It moves around the center at a very high speed. This speed ranges from sixty to one hundred and fifty kilometers an hour. It occurs in Bangladesh very frequently.

A cyclone may occur at any time at any place. It mostly occurs within the tropics. Usually, it has its origin in the sea owing to the low pressure of the atmosphere. Then it begins to blow violently towards the land. It is often accompanied by thunders and heavy showers. Thunder roars and lightning flashes. Nature looks gloomy and terrible.

A cyclone lasts for a few minutes only, sometimes for hours. It causes great havoc to its visit. It uproots trees, blows away houses, smashes buildings, and kills men and cattle. It sinks boats, ships, and launches. It also causes tidal waves.

A terrible cyclone accompanied by tidal bore swept over some coastal districts of Bangladesh. It swept over at a speed of 235 kilometers per hour. it lasted for the whole night and caused much rain. Thousands of houses were leveled to the ground. Lands of Hatiya, Urirchar, Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Kutubdia, Moheshkhali, Bhola, etc. went underwater. Corps were damaged. Ships, boats, and launches sank. About one lakh and thirty-nine thousand human lives and thousands of cattle were killed.

The government with the assistance of the people of Bangladesh took prompt measures for the relief, rescue and rehabilitation of the affected persons.
We have no control over such a natural calamity. The government may however take precautions and warn the people to take shelter in safer places.
