My Knowledge About Solar by @johnmitchel|| 25-08-2022
In simple terms solar energy is any type of energy that is generated by the sun. The energy from the sun is converted to electrical energy through the use of solar technologies. I will be concentrating on photovoltaic systems as one of the solar technologies used in harnessing solar energy. A photovoltaic system makes used of cells which we do call solar panels to generate electricity by absorbing sunlight.
In Nigeria, the main sources of energy used are coal, petroleum, natural gas and hydropower. Apart from hydropower which poised high cost of production, all the aforementioned sources of energy poised a great risk to the health of man because of pollution from the generation of this energy. Even with all the energy mentioned above, Nigeria lacks behind in the area of electricity generation which is directly affecting the economy of the country. The energy economy should be diversified and one of the cleanest energy sources to be invested in is solar energy, reasons being stated below.
The benefits of solar energy are enormous and if it is harnessed, it could develop the economic status of the country.
Solar energy or power is a renewable energy that is available everyday of the year, this means that electricity can be generated 24 hours every day.
In Nigeria, we pay high tariffs bills even when we don't have 24 hour supply of electricity, this is not favourable for businesses to grow in and this is in turn affecting the economy of the nation at large. A better way to curb high tariffs is to encourage the use of solar energy. After installations, solar panels can stay as long as 30 years without high cost of maintenance or any need for tariffs.
Solar energy will provide clean green energy but at a low cost. We have also seen the effects of petroleum energy in the environment, from exploration to domestic use, petroleum energy poises a great danger to the health of humans. This danger can be eradicated by the use of solar energy; less pollution of the air means a healthier community of people.
Though the use of solar energy is still developing in Nigeria, but if this energy is harnessed well in the country, pollution will be curbed, clean energy will be achieved, high electricity cost will be curbed whilst we enjoy reliable and economical energy.
I have used gadgets that uses solar energy. As a student, the community where I reside has constant blackout in the night and this was very difficult for me to study. So I had to buy a lamp light that made use of solar energy, this was live changing for me as a student cos I would power my light during the day and use it to read in the night. Also have an MP3 player which makes use of solar energy. And I must say that if solar energy is harnessed in our different communities, it wil improve both our community and the nation at last.
