IS GRAPHIC DESIGN A GOOD CAREER FOR YOU?
In 2016, I graduated in high school, and I went to college, I studied computer science. When I was expose to graphic design course, I actually love the course and I had the passion to learn more about graphics and don’t forget that was just the basics. After college, I decided to dive into design world at School of graphics, Uyo Akwa Ibom state and guess what I never knew anything about using design apps. I met some interesting people, but I also discovered passion. I fell in love with design when I was introduced to fundamental concepts such as colour theory, design history, and design application interfaces. My first design was a logo for spaceship company.
I maintain all of my previous designs because I enjoy seeing my timeline and it makes me proud. I'm like, damn, look how far I've come; who could have predicted this? Because I was terrible at first. I wasn't sure what I was doing. I suddenly knew I had found a new passion, and I adore it. The image below depicts my first label design creation at school of graphics.
I'm going to tell you about my experiences in graphics field. I am going to give you some pros and then hopefully, you can make the choice to see if it is the right move for you.
One of the advantages for me was the wide range of chances. One day, I might be designing a website. Another day, I could be creating a logo, a flyer, a banner, or a digital banner. I could do whatever I wanted, and the fact that I never worked on the same job twice was incredible to me.
Another advantage is that you love doing your task. It's validating when people approach you and say, "Man, that's a dope shirt." Who designed it? You would be like, "I did." The fact is that it's great that people are looking for your services and that you're getting compensated for them. That's an incredible feeling to be able to get paid to do what you love while also having others seek you out and look for your services.
Another advantage is witnessing yourself develop in front of your own eyes. Another pros is seeing yourselves grow in front of your own eyes. Again, I would like to go back and look at where I started and look at where I am today. In 2016, when I first started, I didn’t know how to make good use of computer design programs like adobe illustrator, photoshop and InDesign. I didn’t know what I was doing I just knew that I love it. And now, I've established several enterprises around graphic design. I've made a profession around it. I am currently 4 years into this game. That seems ridiculous to me. I believe that once you begin your profession, you should document anything that involves chronicling your journey and then go back and look at it after a month. That seems ridiculous to me. I believe that once you begin your profession, you should chronicle anything that involves tracking your path and then revisit it a month, two months, or even six months later to see how far you have gone.
Again, I started by designing flyers. Following that, I learned how to create T-shirts, websites, campaigns, banners, editorial designs, and a variety of other items. Do you feel me? It's a never-ending adventure with new lessons every day. Every day, you learn more about your career and yourself. That is great for me. Becoming a graphic designer is difficult because there are so many designers, and the situation is worsening as more people take shortcuts. Many people employ AI programmes to steal work rather than designing it themselves, much alone coming up with creative concepts.
In conclusion, is graphic design the perfect career for you? I would say if you're creative, determined, a lifelong learner, and you just want to create, and if you don't fit any of those, it's not for you, and that's fine. As for me, I chose design and I adore it. I am grateful for making it thus far. Please leave a comment and upvote if you find this post useful.
