How to Take Cylinder Sampling in Hardened Concrete?

I am working as a geotechnical technician in the construction industry. Our biggest feature in all the work we do is to ensure that the work we do is of high quality. For this reason, we check the quality of the work done by making frequent checks in our work at our work sites. In this way, we prevent defective workmanship and build structures that will be used for many years.

Concrete is produced using aggregates of various sizes, cement, water and chemical additives. Each concrete produced has a class. The concrete class to be used according to the nature of the building is determined at the project stage. Then, mixtures are prepared using suitable aggregates. As long as these mixtures give the desired value, it is allowed to be used in building elements.

It is very important to control the concrete produced. In this way, all kinds of problems that may occur are prevented and a quality production is ensured. The concrete produced at the construction site is tested with the samples we take, so that it is checked whether it is suitable or not.

As a result of the low sample values taken for some building elements, in order to check the structure again and to understand where the problem is, cylindrical samples are taken from the hardened concrete and taken to the test again. The results are of vital importance, and if it is not suitable, it is requested that this structure be removed and a new structure be built in its place.

All these works have great material and moral damages. Removing the unsuitable concrete is a difficult process and also causes the company to lose money.

Concrete production, which was carried out in a job I checked a short time ago, was evaluated on the samples we received and it was decided that it was not suitable. Before the concrete structure is reconstructed, cylindrical samples will be taken on the structure and they will be checked one more time, and the results will be evaluated and the structure will be decided.

Cylinder sampling process at the construction site is as follows.

First of all, appropriate equipment is provided to take cylindrical samples.

  • Cylinder sampling machine

  • Rebar Detection Device

  • Fixing devices

  • Cutter roller apparatus

  • Sample Storage Containers

  • Sufficient amount of water (It is supplied from the Tankers at the construction site.)

After the equipment is supplied, the places where the cylinder sample will be taken are determined on the structure.

Thanks to this device, the locations of the reinforcement in the building are determined and the machine to be used while taking samples is prevented from coinciding with the reinforcement.

The machine to be used to take samples from the marked places using the reinforcement detection device is fixed to the concrete.

Then, the process of taking the cylindrical sample starts with the help of water at a certain speed.

Cylindrical specimens of the desired length are removed from their slots after the cutting is finished.

In order to indicate where these extracted samples belong, coding is done on the sample.

Afterwards, the samples are packaged appropriately and sent to the laboratory in order to be transported and not damaged on the way.

The samples coming to the laboratory are recorded and subjected to compressive strength tests. The values obtained as a result of the test are evaluated and it is decided whether the structure is suitable or not.

Cylinder sample results of our work that I explained above were not suitable. Therefore, it was requested that the building be destroyed and a new one built in its place.

No matter what sector we are in, we must always respect our work and do what is necessary. Since these productions are national wealth, they have losses in the country's economy.

Therefore, I advise employers to be more careful in this regard and to do their work more meticulously. It is really sad to encounter such situations, because the smallest mistakes in these productions lead to big problems later on. We should be more careful in our work and fulfill all the requirements of our work completely.
