Steemit Engagement Challenge-S5W2|| Natural disasters in my place

As kids back in our various schools, we were taught by our teachers what natural disaster are. We were also taught what causes these natural disasters. Some of which we were told were natural occurrences and some were caused by human activities. I will like to explain to you once more what actually is natural disaster. Natural disasters can be explained as a harmful unforeseen natural occurrences that happens to our communities or societies. These occurrences usually harm people or individuals living in those particular communities or societies. Natural disasters usually occurs or happens naturally, that is it is caused by nature. Also this same natural disasters can occur as a result of some human activities which leads to the occurrence of the natural disaster. There have been so many recent natural disasters which has happened as a result of some human activities. Some of these human activities such as choking gutters with rubbish. Whereby it these rubbish blocks the way of water and then tries to cause flooding a natural disaster.

Areas that natural disasters occur

Natural disasters usually occurs in areas that are vulnerable to its occurrences. That is to say, it happens to areas that are either in it way or in a wrong place. When this happens, it is very likely that natural disasters can occur in such areas. In the case of my area, the common natural disaster we usually experience is flooding. Here in the southern part of Ghana, precisely Ashanti region the rainfalls very often. The rainfall is usually accompanied with plenty water. There by causing floods in some of the areas. At my area, we experience very little amount of flood. But the rainfall is destroying the roads leading to our houses, which is a very bad and serious issue. Almost all the road from the main streets leading back to our various homes is in a bad shape.

How do the natural disasters cause ruins

The ruins caused by the flood is very disturbing and worrying. The flood turns out to destroy our roads and buildings. The flood causes deep erosions in the roads and enters our homes there by weakening the buildings and causing some of the buildings to collapse. Most of the uncompleted buildings in my areas that have no residents or people living in them usually are the ones that collapses mostly. The roads have deep erosion holes in them as the result of the flood. There by making the roads inaccessible for vehicles and humans. Due to the deep holes in the roads the roads are always filled with plenty water. The waters in the hole are plenty to the extent that they don’t dry up easily and leaving the roads filled with water. Automobile users turn out to be using peoples houses as new route in order to get to their destinations.

How are the people affected by the disaster

The people in my locality or area are being affected in so many ways due to the floods. Below are some of the ways in which we are being affected.

• Our roads are being destroyed, which is the big holes carved in the roads by erosion which is as the result of the floods.

• Automobile users turns out to be disturbing some of the various houses in my area. Which is by using their automobiles to pass through the houses which is a very bad thing. The noises from the automobiles disturbs the people, most especially the big vehicles.
  Also there is a chance of an accident occurring as there are people always in the houses. Which is a very serious issue.

• Our buildings collapses as a result of the flood. The walls of the houses get weak and wet as a result of the water entering into them. There by causing harm to the people.

What is the most probably cause of it

The most probably causes of the natural disaster in my is basically caused by some factors.

• These factors are the mass amount of rainfall in the area. It rains too much in my area, which causes the flooding.

• Lack of drainage systems along the roads and with in my neighborhood. This has being one of the major causes of the flooding in my area. Due to the lack of the drainage systems water from the rain finds it difficult to go, that is there is no passage for the water thereby causing stagnant water bodies in the area and on the road side.

• The inappropriate construction and settlement of the houses in my area also is factor that contributes to the flooding in my area. Well it isn’t necessary if the roads leading to our various homes are not being tiled, that is with coal tile if there are are drainage systems along the roads there wouldn’t be the need of the disaster occurring. But if the roads are being tiled with coal it will be better.

Was there a prior alert from the government

The governmental system here recognizes such incidents in our communities as minor problems. The only alert we usually get is from the weather forecast that either it will be raining heavy today or any other thing related to rainfall. We the locals have been complaining to the governments for several decades now. But they seem to have turned a blind eye on our issues. Which is very disappointing indeed. Helps only goes to the major cities in my country that is in the case of flooding.

What can i do in a situation like this

In a situation like this, the most important thing one has to do as a help is to help evacuate the place. Also one can help with the fetching of the water from the houses that has been affected. Whiles in the case of the holes in the roads, the water need to be pumped out and the hole filled with rocks and sand. Also there is the need for a drainage system to be constructed so I can try to convince the people in my area to help or assist in the construction of the drainage systems. Even though they might feel like that is the responsibility of the government but if the government is not coming to our aid, we the people living in the area will have to come out and do something.

In conclusion, we have to understand that natural disasters usually happens naturally. But there are some human activities which could trigger or make them worse. So we should be mindful as people on how we treat nature. Also we there people have to understand that help from the government won’t always be available for us so we need to at times get up and do things by ourselves. Which will in turn benefit us in return.
