How do you restore a broken character?

There are many interactions in life which are all based on one's character. Your ability to be trusted, to be honest, to be thought of as being good, to love and more.

But there are some situations where you mess up your character, where you break the trust and become the opposite of whom you used to be.

It would have been nothing if those around you wouldn't change their perceptions of you, but in most cases, they do because it is difficult to trust someone you know you can't trust.

How do you earn their trust after you've lost it? How do you restore that broken character?
