It was a strange and difficult decision for my family when my sister had to undergo cancer surgery when she was 6 months pregnant.
At first my sister had cancer in her neck. At that time the cancer was still the size of a marble seed and people suggested surgery while still young. My sister was scared and didn't do the surgery and chose traditional treatment.
As time goes by, the cancer is getting bigger and bigger as she is pregnant with her second child. My older sister's health also started to decline.
Finally in 2016 my sister with her husband, mother, and a sister-in-law went to a hospital located in the city of Aceh province to see a better doctor.
At that time the cancer in his neck was the size of an adult. My sister had to cover her neck even when she was at home because anyone who saw would be shocked.
My sister traveled to the hospital at night in a rental car so that she would arrive at the provincial city hospital in the morning.
Once there and after seeing a specialist. The doctor concluded that my sister could be operated on, but the baby in the womb would bear all the risks. My family did not respond to the doctor's advice.
However, after thinking for a long time, and already resigned to my sister's situation, I agreed that she would be operated on with various risks.
My sister successfully underwent surgery. Every few days the nearest nurse came to change the bandage. But what happened, it seems that the doctor's words that the baby will bear the risk are true.
After the surgery, a few months later my sister gave birth safely to her second child, a baby boy. The baby was born normally with a weight of 2.5 kg.
2 months later I also gave birth to a daughter. But day by day the strangeness of the baby began to appear. He couldn't get on his stomach and crawl. While my daughter can.
Another oddity when my daughter can walk. Even when my daughter started school she still couldn't sit up let alone walk.
My sister only had time to breastfeed her for 3 months. Because her condition started to drop again and in 2017 my sister died at the age of her baby who was only 8 months old. Now the baby who has grown up is in the care of my mother.
This is a portrait of the baby, named Alvin. Now he is 5 years and 5 months. But Alvin couldn't sit up and walk. Every day she can only sit in a baby wheelchair. When all the children his age have started school, run. But not with my nephew Alvin.
This is really sad, because at the end of it all your sister died and the surgery affected the baby. Is there anything that can be done medically for the baby?
When Alvin was a baby, people suggested massage therapy to loosen the veins. But to no effect he will be able to sit down.
This is really sad. That means he will have to live his life depending on other people.
Yes, that's what makes me sad, because my mother can't always take care of her. My mother is getting older day by day and Alvin is getting bigger day by day.
