The Sutlej is one of the rivers of Punjab. It originates from Rakshasatlas, a lake in Tibet. Its total length is 1448 km. The Sutlej is also called the Red River in Greek. In addition, its ancient name is Satdari. The locals of Tibet also call it the Elephant River. The Sutlej River flows through the valleys of the Himalayas, irrigating an area of up to 900 miles in the state of Himachal Pradesh Goes From here it flows southwest in the form of a large canal, falls into the Beas River and enters Pakistani territory in the Kasur District of the Pakistani Punjab, and merges into the Chenab River at Panjnad via Och Sharif. This place is Bahawalpur. 62 km west of Head irrigates the lands of Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar districts passing through Salmanki near Depalpur. Nawab Bahawalpur dug canals from the Sutlej River to make his state fertile, the water of which is not only irrigating the lands but also used for growing crops in some parts of the Cholistan Desert.
India's right to the water of this river has been recognized under the 1960 Indus Water Treaty. India has built the Bhakra Ningal Dam on the Sutlej River, which generates 450,000 kWh of electricity and its water is used for agricultural purposes. In addition, India has made the area fertile by constructing canal projects from the Sutlej River called Sirhind Canal and Sutlej Valley.
