Paint the Sky

a caged bird
silver-toned, blue crowned
and golden-breasted

does not trust his wings
has not learned to love the wind
for its power to lift and transcend
transport, cradle, and inspire

he has not accepted the pleasure
the intimacy of softly ruffled feathers

he trusts the bars
he trusts the isolation
he believes the fear
that strangles his space
keeps the shadow monsters
           anxiety and guilt
abbreviated and veiled
but continually circling

believe, little bird
the warm zephyr does not lie
her soft whisper is the Way
her sweet song the key

she has found freedom
and yearns for you to join her
with your bright, fully-extended plumes
and her faithful, whimsical perseverance
together, you will paint the sky
