WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE HUMAN LUNGS
The human lungs is a pair of organs which can be located within the chest. It's primary function is to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood and the air we breath.
Human being has two lungs;the left and the right lung.the one closer to the heart is heavier than the other.
FUNCTIONS OF THE LUNGS
1:EXCHANGE OF GAS BETWEEN THE AIR AND THE BLOOD.
The lung takes in oxygen from the air we breath and exchanges carbon dioxide with the atmosphere.
2:pH BALANCE
when their is excess carbon dioxide in the body,it can cause a rise in the acidic Level.when the lungs detects the increase in the acidity,it increases the rate of ventilation in the body in other to remove the excess Carbon dioxide.
3: PROTECTION FROM DUST PARTICLES AND BACTERIA
The mucus that is formed by the lungs along the respiratory passage traps dust and bacteria and prevents them from entering into the body through the respiratory airways.
RESPIRATORY DISEASES
1:INFLAMMATORY DISEASES
diseases in this category include
a: ASTHMA
It occurs when their is too much production of mucus in the respiratory airways, swelling and narrowing of the airways.this can lead to difficulties in breathing.
b: CYSTIC FIBROSIS
It arises as a result of production of mucus that are sticky and more thick than usual. It is hereditary and it affects the respiratory and digestive systems
2: RESTRICTIVE LUNG DISEASE
Their is shortness and reduction of the air that an individual breaths which is as a result of the airways being restricted.this can happen as a result of obesity, lungs becoming stiff.etc
ACTIVITIES THAT AFFECTS THE LUNGS
1: SMOKING
Smoking of cigarettes is one of the major causes of lung cancer. It causes the lungs to swell up,narrows the air passage and also gradually facilitate reactions that will will lead to cancer of the lungs
2: EXPOSURE TO INDOOR POLLUTANTS
indoor chemicals like radon, insecticides can cause lung diseases.
